The Principal Functional Consultant serves as the critical bridge between e-invoicing regulatory mandates, business processes, and technical implementation teams. You will translate complex global e-invoicing and continuous transaction control (CTC) requirements into structured, applicable designs. These will ensure successful implementation across Avalara's E-Invoicing and Live Reporting (ELR) ecosystem. Reporting to the Global Professional Services Leader, you will work with mandate subject matter experts, engineering teams, ERP connector teams, implementation consultants, AI partners, and strategic technology partners. You will consistently interpret, document, and implement regulatory requirements. You will combine deep functional knowledge of Procure-to-Pay (P2P) and Order-to-Cash (O2C) processes with technical consulting and solution design capabilities. The ELR Technologist is both a trusted advisor and implementation lead, helping accelerate customer onboarding, reduce deployment friction, improve implementation consistency, and create successful customer outcomes.

What Your Responsibilities Will Be

  • Regulatory Translation & Solution Design: Partner with ELR mandate SMEs to understand evolving global e-invoicing requirements. Translate regulatory mandates into standardized business and technical design artifacts. Develop reusable implementation patterns, integration requirements, process flows, and solution blueprints. Create living requirements documentation that evolves alongside regulatory changes.
  • ERP & Business Process Consulting: Analyze customer Order-to-Cash (O2C) and Procure-to-Pay (P2P) processes and identify impacts from e-invoicing mandates. Map business processes to ELR platform capabilities and ERP integrations. Advise customers, partners, and other teams on best practices for e-invoicing adoption and compliance. Support solution design workshops and discovery sessions.
  • Implementation & Delivery Leadership: Guide implementation teams through mandate-specific requirements and design decisions. Support onboarding and deployment activities for new ELR customers and partners. Provide consultation during project execution to ensure successful implementation outcomes. Identify risks, gaps, and dependencies early and guide resolution across partners.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Be the primary contact between regulatory SMEs, product management, engineering, connector teams, implementation teams, and partners. Facilitate requirement clarification and ongoing partner understanding. Support internal and external partner enablement activities. Contribute to training materials, implementation guides, and partner readiness programs.
  • Continuous Improvement: Monitor mandate changes and assess impacts to existing designs and implementations. Promote standardization across connector and partner implementations. Identify opportunities to improve deployment efficiency, scalability, and customer experience. Drive implementation of methodologies, frameworks, and reusable assets into business workstreams.

What You’ll Need To Be Successful

  • 10+ years of experience in ERP consulting, solution architecture, business analysis, product ownership, or enterprise software implementation.
  • Experience with Procure-to-Pay (P2P) and Order-to-Cash (O2C) business processes.
  • Experience with invoice lifecycle management, accounts payable, accounts receivable, procurement, and financial operations.
  • Experience translating requirements into technical designs and implementation guidance.
  • Experience working with ERP systems such as SAP, Oracle, Microsoft Dynamics 365, NetSuite, Workday, Infor, or similar platforms.
  • Strong stakeholder management and experience communicating complex technical concepts to a variety of audiences.
  • Experience working across technical and non-technical teams.
  • Experience with global e-invoicing, indirect tax compliance, CTC frameworks, PEPPOL, or digital reporting mandates.
  • Product ownership or product management experience.
  • Experience designing integrations, APIs, or enterprise application architectures.
  • Familiarity with SaaS implementation methodologies and partner ecosystems.
  • Experience working with system integrators, ISVs, or technology partners.
  • Knowledge of B2B transaction processing and electronic document exchange.
