Job Description

SOCOTEC UK has an exciting opportunity for a motivated Junior Geophysicist to join our growing Environment & Safety Division across the UK. We offer comprehensive training and professional development designed to enhance your geophysical expertise, giving you hands on experience with multiple survey methodologies, mentorship from Senior Geophysicists, and the opportunity to develop a long‑term career in a growing and rewarding field. As a Junior Geophysicist, you will play a vital role in supporting our clients by helping to deliver accurate geophysical surveys, ensuring safe site investigations, and contributing to the success of our business.

The tasks you will undertake will include (but are not limited to):

  • Undertaking geophysical surveys using various methodologies including Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), seismic, resistivity, electrical conductivity, and gravity methods
  • Downloading, quality‑checking, and post‑processing survey data in accordance with project specifications and timelines
  • Operating and maintaining geophysical survey equipment to industry standards
  • Supporting site investigations across the UK, with flexibility for overnight stays and extended travel when required
  • Adhering to SOCOTEC Health & Safety protocols and maintaining safe working practises on all site assignments
  • Completing mandatory training modules and developing technical competency across all survey equipment

Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you will be able to demonstrate:

  • A degree in Geophysics, Geology, Earth Sciences, or a related discipline
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills with attention to detail
  • Excellent communication abilities and a professional approach to client interaction
  • A full UK driving licence and willingness to travel extensively across the UK
  • Commitment to maintaining high health and safety standards in all working environments
  • Enthusiasm for continuous learning and professional development

It is desirable, that you also have some of the following:

  • Previous experience or exposure to geophysical survey methodologies
  • Familiarity with geophysical data processing software
  • Understanding of UK construction and infrastructure sector requirements
  • Membership or working towards membership of a relevant professional body (e.g., Geological Society)
  • Experience working in field‑based or site investigation roles

Travel across the UK is very common. Candidates must be open to working away from home during the week and accommodate night or evening shifts as needed.
