Cambridge | Full-Time Hybrid - 4 days on site 45-50K

Are you an experienced Infrastructure or Systems Engineer looking for an opportunity to take ownership of IT services and influence technology strategy within a prestigious organisation? We are recruiting on behalf of a highly respected educational institution seeking a talented Systems Infrastructure Engineer to join its IT department. Reporting directly to the Head of IT, this role offers the opportunity to lead on infrastructure design, service improvement, major incident management and the delivery of strategic technology projects across a complex and evolving environment.

This is an ideal position for a senior technical professional with strong Microsoft infrastructure expertise, networking knowledge and a passion for delivering secure, resilient and high-performing IT services.

The Role

As Systems Engineer, you will act as a senior technical authority responsible for the design, management and continual improvement of critical infrastructure platforms, network services and enterprise applications. You will take ownership of key systems, provide third-line support for complex technical issues, lead infrastructure projects and ensure services meet agreed performance, security and availability targets. Working closely with the Head of IT, you will contribute to strategic technology decisions while also supporting the development of colleagues through mentoring and technical leadership.

Key Responsibilities

  • Infrastructure Management
    • Take ownership of assigned infrastructure systems and network services.
    • Ensure high availability, resilience, capacity and performance across the environment.
    • Maintain security, integrity and continuity of business-critical services.
    • Develop technical standards, service designs and operational procedures.
    • Monitor and improve infrastructure performance and service delivery.
  • Application Management
    • Provide technical guidance on application security, licensing, backup and disaster recovery requirements.
    • Evaluate and implement software upgrades and enhancements.
    • Ensure systems are appropriately documented and supported.
    • Promote best practice around application management and operational use.
  • Third-Line Technical Support
    • Act as the final escalation point for complex infrastructure and service issues.
    • Lead the investigation and resolution of major incidents.
    • Perform root-cause analysis and implement long-term fixes.
    • Support critical business systems and enterprise applications.
    • Ensure service levels are maintained across the IT estate.
  • IT Service Management
    • Lead activities across: Incident Management, Request Management, Problem Management, Change Management.
    • Drive continual service improvement initiatives.
    • Ensure governance processes and operational standards are followed.
  • Project Delivery
    • Provide technical leadership on infrastructure and technology projects.
    • Define scope, costs, resources and implementation plans.
    • Coordinate delivery across internal teams and external suppliers.
    • Ensure projects are delivered on time and within budget.
  • Security & Compliance
    • Monitor infrastructure security and service compliance.
    • Investigate security incidents and implement corrective actions.
    • Contribute to security policies, standards and best practice.
    • Support compliance with recognised frameworks and controls.
