We are looking for a Principal Engineer who wants more ownership than just the technical bit. This is still hands-on engineering, but the role sits much closer to the product, customer and business problem. You will be working in a software business building products used in live, operational environments. The work has real users, real workflows and real consequences if the product decision is wrong.
The key part of this role is being involved before everything has been turned into tickets. You will work with a customer-facing lead to understand what the client actually needs, what the business is trying to solve, and what is worth building. Then you will help shape the technical approach and deliver it properly. You will be expected to challenge things, not for the sake of it, but because you can see when a feature is too complex, too expensive, too vague, or likely to create pain later.
You will suit this if you are the type of engineer who wants to understand the why behind the work, not just the implementation.
What you will be doing:
- Working with customer-facing teams to shape product decisions
- Understanding customer problems before agreeing the solution
- Designing and delivering features end to end
- Making technical trade-offs clear to the business
- Challenging assumptions when something doesn’t make sense
