Overview
The Role
Social Work England is the specialist body that regulates social workers in their vital role. Every day, social workers support millions of people to improve their chances in life. The IT Operations Manager will take overall responsibility for all the IT operations management activities across the end user and business application estate. They will also support the Head of IT in identifying and implementing the department’s strategic objectives and assist in the smooth running of the IT team.
Responsibilities
- Using ITIL (IT Infrastructure Library) methodologies this role will ensure that all day-to-day operational activities are carried out in a timely and reliable way. The role will be split across three main disciplines:
- IT support for users, physical and virtual devices, and infrastructure,
- The ongoing maintenance and continuous development of our Azure tenant and infrastructure and,
- Maintaining and improving Social Work England’s security posture.
What you will do
- Lead and provide escalated support for the IT operations officer and technician using FreshService ITSM (IT Service Management) tool and support and assist the wider IT team in day-to-day operations, sharing knowledge and skills as required.
- Lead the support for our Azure infrastructure estate ensuring security, best practice, and continuous development is upheld.
- Administer systems including Microsoft 365, ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning), and others ensuring effective usability, security and backups are in place.
- Oversee system security including Azure RBAC (Role based access control), PIM (Privileged Identity Management) & PAM (Privileged Access Management), Microsoft 365 security investigations and mitigations and access reviews.
- Manage IT procurement exercises relating to software, hardware and licensing ensuring best value for money and added value.
- Develop IT policies and practices around security, compliance, and usage.
- Keep up to date on existing and emerging technologies.
- Act as Change Manager ensuring the process is fit for purpose and adhered to by the IT team and wider organisation using digital services. Ensuring any core messages are shared with key stakeholders.
- Work closely with key stakeholders and product owners, including ELT and SLT, Communications, Commercial, Finance and People teams in keeping existing systems and processes up to date and secure as well as scoping out requirements for new projects.
- Lead on Cyber Security for operational IT systems ensuring Cyber Essentials is maintained and work toward Cyber Essentials Plus.
- Working closely with the Head of IT, risk manager and other colleagues, define and manage the disaster recovery and annual testing process.
- Deputise for the Head of IT and Data Management as and when required.
- Solve complex issues which may require in depth analysis, thinking and understanding around the issues, then suggest and present solutions back to Head of IT and senior team members.
- Be the experienced and recognised expert, negotiating with external and internal stakeholders to deliver a great IT service. Able to articulate complex IT matters and influence others by providing specific evidence and expertise.
Your Skills, Knowledge And Experience
- Extensive knowledge of Microsoft 365, Azure AD, Endpoint Manager, Defender, Cloud App Security, Exchange, Microsoft Office applications (desktop and web), and Microsoft Surface devices.
- Extensive knowledge of compliance, configuration and conditional access policies including Group Policy.
- Knowledge of managing an Azure infrastructure estate including networking, security, and configuration and at least certification in Azure Fundamentals AZ-900.
- Knowledge and experience of ITIL methodologies including ITIL Foundation Certificate v3 or above.
- Knowledge of data protection operations and legislation, e.g. GDPR.
- Ability to work under pressure and to demanding timescales with the ability to prioritise workloads appropriately.
- Ability to create fully scoped out business cases to influence decision making or make final decisions based on requirements.
- Excellent organisation and time management skills.
- Ability to work cross-organisationally, working well with others and responding positively, creatively, and supportively to a variety of colleagues while maintaining high and consistent standards.
- A strong team player who works collaboratively, building relationships with colleagues, partners, and other stakeholders across all levels to deliver results.

- Job type: Permanent
- Working pattern: Full time. We offer flexible working subject to business need.
- Salary: £53,426 per year, rising to £55,749 per year after successful completion of a 6-month probationary period.
