This East London Authority is looking for a Benefits and Housing Needs Officer. Responsibilities include:
- Service Delivery relating to Benefits and Housing Needs
- Assessment of Housing Benefit and Council Tax Reduction
- Homeless prevention and the provision of housing advice
- Homeless assessments and reviews
- The Council's Housing Register
- Lettings and the allocation of social housing
- Housing supply and procurement
- Management and maintenance of temporary accommodation
- Financial monitoring, payments and income collection
- Handling complaints, Member enquiries and FOIs
Key functions include:
- Processing of Housing Benefit, Council Tax Reduction, Discretionary Housing Payments
- Welfare reform support including discretionary schemes
- Homelessness prevention and advice
- Homeless assessment and housing register applications
- Lettings of housing
- Management and maintenance of temporary accommodation
- Financial monitoring and maintenance
- Handling complaints, members and mayoral enquiries and FOI requests
The role requires delivering an efficient, high quality and customer-focussed service for a diverse client group, including vulnerable and disadvantaged households. Mentoring new staff and providing guidance on complex case work is also essential.
Additionally, the officer will protect the public purse by identifying and preventing fraud and error in all duties. Assisting with the development of initiatives to meet service aims, including increasing property supply and contract management, is expected.
Co-operation across the Benefits and Housing Needs Service is necessary to promote an effective and holistic service to residents. Conducting visits to customers and properties to fulfil statutory and corporate duties, including residency checks and assisting vulnerable community members, is part of the role.
