Snodhill Castle Preservation Trust (SCPT) is a registered charity established in 2016. The castle is located in Herefordshire in the hamlet of Snodhill, approximately 7 miles east of Hay on Wye and 15 miles west of Hereford. It dates from the 11th century and is a designated scheduled monument of national importance, is rich in wildlife and enjoys a stunning rural setting. SCPT holds the castle under a 999-year lease for the purpose of preserving it for the benefit of the people of the hamlet of Snodhill, Herefordshire and the nation. Since 2016 we have rescued the castle ruins from risk so that it is now a safe and beautiful place for people to visit.
Fortifying the Future is a three-year project running to the end of July 2027 made possible with The National Lottery Heritage Fund. Thanks to National Lottery players, we are establishing the castle’s unique place in our national story and engaging more people in its future. A key element of the project is redesigning our website to make it more appealing to more people. In 2025, we commissioned an audience review which identified learners and families as two key groups who don’t currently visit the site in significant numbers but could benefit from experiencing it. SCPT relies entirely on volunteers to operate and does not have the capacity to stimulate and support a programme of school visits. As part of Fortifying the Future, a basic shelter, water supply and compost toilet are being installed on site to make it more usable by visiting groups.
SCPT wishes to procure a consultant to create a set of enjoyable learning and activity resources for Snodhill Castle. The consultant must:
- Be visually attractive, fully designed and ready to use, including site maps
- Align with the primary curriculums in England and Wales (Welsh language not required)
- Include a guide for teachers on suggested use, both for classroom learning and visiting the site
- Include enjoyable, family‑friendly versions
- Be suitable for download and print by families and teachers
- Feature seasonal wildlife and subject themed variations (e.g. local medieval history, castle construction)
