Job Description Overview

We are seeking a motivated and technically strong Sustainability and Carbon Consultant to join our growing Carbon & Sustainability team within the Sustainable Futures Practice.

This role is primarily focused on the delivery of whole life carbon assessment, carbon modelling, carbon management and decarbonisation advisory services across major infrastructure, transport, water, energy and built environment projects.

You will support clients in quantifying, understanding and reducing carbon emissions, providing the evidence needed to drive better project, programme and investment decisions.

You will also support preparation of Environmental Impact Assessments to support the planning process for major projects.

As part of our collaborative and supportive team, you will work alongside leading carbon and sustainability specialists while developing your technical expertise, client engagement skills and project delivery experience.

Your role

  • Deliver whole life carbon assessments, carbon footprinting studies and net zero transition pathways across a range of infrastructure and organisational projects.
  • Develop and maintain carbon models, including baseline assessments, hotspot analysis, optioneering studies, scenario modelling and decarbonisation pathways.
  • Support the delivery of carbon management services, including Carbon Management Plans, carbon reduction workshops and performance reporting.
  • Prepare high-quality technical reports, presentations and client deliverables, ensuring outputs are robust, accurate and clearly communicated.
  • Present carbon modelling outputs and technical findings to project teams and clients, explaining complex concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Support project management activities including budget monitoring and task coordination on smaller projects.
  • Contribute to bids and proposals through technical content preparation, methodology development and cost estimation.
  • Support and mentor graduates and assistant consultants, sharing technical knowledge and contributing to team capability development.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams across Atkins Réalis to integrate carbon considerations into project planning, design and delivery.

About you

  • Strong experience in carbon modelling is essential.
  • Demonstrable experience delivering whole life carbon assessments and/or organisational greenhouse gas inventories independently.
  • Experience applying recognised carbon accounting standards and methodologies, including PAS 2080, GHG Protocol and whole life carbon assessment approaches to develop carbon baselines, hotspot analyses, carbon reduction studies and decarbonisation pathways.
  • Experience using carbon modelling and assessment tools such as One Click LCA, National Highways Carbon Tool, RSSB Carbon Tool, advanced Excel-based carbon models.
  • Experience in Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) would be beneficial.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to identify assumptions, interrogate datasets, undertake quantitative analysis and communicate findings clearly.
  • Experience producing technical reports and presenting complex information to clients and project teams.
  • Degree qualified in Engineering, Sustainability, Environmental Science or a related discipline.
  • Working towards a relevant professional qualification is desirable.
