Job Overview

Atkins Réalis seeks experienced Railway Engineering Safety Professionals to support independent safety assessment activities across major rail infrastructure projects, including the East Coast Digital Program, Trans Pennine Route Upgrade, and Central Rail Systems Alliance.

Location

Positions based in Derby, Birmingham and Manchester. Other UK locations may be considered.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead independent safety assessment projects as an Assessment Body (As Bo) and Independent Safety Assessor (ISA) under CSM‑REA and EN 50126‑29, EN 50716, and EN ISO 17020.
  • Define and solve safety problems with industry partners, challenging decisions and facilitating client thinking.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to deliver Independent Safety Assessment activities and Interoperability Assurance.
  • Support bid writing, pricing and program management to secure and deliver work.
  • Maintain professional qualifications and drive continuous skill development.
  • Promote an inclusive culture and align processes across the business.
  • Required Qualifications
  • Proven experience in Independent Safety Assessment activities in the rail industry, with sound knowledge of EN ISO 17020 and the Common Safety Method for Risk Evaluation and Assessment Reg.
  • Knowledge of railway standards and legislation (TSIs, NTSNs, RGS, RIS, etc.).
  • Experience in hazard identification, analysis and risk assessment methods (HAZID, HAZOP, FMECA, FTA).
  • Application of Reliability, Availability & Maintainability (RAM) analysis and assurance.
  • Experience in authorising and managing safety for rolling stock, signalling and multidisciplinary rail infrastructure projects.
  • Strong presentation and liaison skills with approval authorities and independent bodies (ORR, NRAP, SRPs).
  • Developing and implementing assurance strategies, plans, observation logs and safety assessment reports.
  • Member of, or in the process of applying to, a relevant recognised professional institution (e. g., Chartered Engineer).
  • Security Clearance

This role may require UK Security Clearance.

Candidates will be informed during the interview process and must provide proof of UK residency of at least 5 years if clearance is required.
