Job Overview
We are seeking a well‑motivated individual to join our dynamic Sustainable River Management team to lead Water Framework Directive (WFD) compliance assessments and related technical activities.
Responsibilities
- Lead the undertaking of Water Framework Directive compliance assessments.
- Lead technical WFD chapters in the EIA/DCO process.
- Support work‑winning activities.
- Collaborate with specialists to ensure projects comply with WFD legislation.
- Liaise with internal and external project teams to deliver the best environmental outcomes.
- Contribute to the standardisation and automation of the WFD assessment process.
- Work effectively as part of a team and with other professionals (environmental scientists, ecologists, water quality specialists, engineers, planners, etc.).
- Delegate, review, and mentor junior staff.
Qualifications
- Degree in a relevant discipline and a relevant postgraduate qualification.
- Essential experience in undertaking a range of Water Framework Directive compliance assessments across small and large‑scale, complex projects.
- Chartered with an appropriate professional body.
- Experience leading assessments of this type and managing project teams.
- Proven ability to undertake, review data, and drive evidence‑based solutions.
- Proven ability to present findings in a well‑structured, concise argument (verbal or written) supported by evidence.
- Proven understanding of the linkages between the Water Framework Directive (WFD) and Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) mitigation requirements.
- Proven ability to write reports in concise, plain English appropriate to audiences.
- Numerate, literate and familiar with IT and software appropriate to the tasks undertaken.
Desirable Qualifications & Skills
- Experience in the development of mitigation options that deliver improvements in channel form and function including river restoration, instream enhancements and river realignments that can contribute to mitigation to ensure projects achieve WFD compliance.
- Experience in having led Article4.7 / Regulation19 assessments and accompanying Applicability Assessments.
- Valid driving licence and availability for travel across the UK and occasionally overseas.
Location
The role can be based at any of our Water Management Consultancy offices, including Birmingham, Bristol, Glasgow, Oxford, London/Epsom, Manchester, Peterborough or Swansea. Preferred locations: Birmingham, Bristol, London/Epsom, Manchester, Oxford or Peterborough. Flexible working, home working and part‑time arrangements are supported.
