The predicted salary is between 45000 - 50000 £ per year.

The role will be responsible for coordinating and managing design and construction activities across the two Dartford tunnels and QE2 Bridge. The role will provide technical input to challenge and propose solutions for upcoming projects including leading with method engineering reviews of design and framework subcontractors’ proposals. The working environment of the live operational tunnels and bridges provides multi-layered complexity for which innovative solutions are to be sought as we strive to improve safety by design.

The role will support the CPS engineering team with design, design coordination, review Framework contractors’ proposals and manage external design consultants in line with the delivery priorities and programme. The role will require the individual to be able to both partake in design/method workshops for specific scopes alongside a regular (weekly) construction site presence to act as the interface between the site construction works and the design & engineering teams. Whilst onsite the individual will be responsible for checking activity Control Plans, specification compliance, QA records, identify/raise NCRs and ensure Technical Queries (TQs) are raised, actioned and responded to with suitable solutions to support the project need.

Your role

  • Design coordinator across a range of secondary steelwork and M&E schemes.
  • Understanding of construction tolerances and awareness of Specification and other Contract documents.
  • Can identify potential hazards onsite or in the planned construction methodology and is proactive in implementing actions and controls.
  • To manage design delivery, and review documentation from internal and external consultants.
  • Preparing, raising or checking Temporary Works Briefs.
  • Reviewing and preparing methods of work for complex installations.
  • Workforce engagement to ensure design and engineering solutions are being efficiently and safely executed onsite.
  • Produces weekly programme and measures design progress against KPI’s and forecast suitable design resources to meet the programme of works.
  • Identifies items of additional work and raises the necessary notifications.

The role will be focused on the Dartford assets however may also be called on to support the other tunnels across the M25 network if needed. The individual will be expected to focus their time on coordinating cost-effective design solutions so to maintain and improve the strategic structures assets at Dartford considering the ranging requirements of all key stakeholders.

Accountabilities

  • Monitor, review and check deliverables from external designers to ensure that designs are complete and compliant prior submission to National Highways through the Review Process.
  • Manage external framework design suppliers to deliver agreed outcomes, scope, on time and to budget.
  • Assist the wider Design Team in various Structures and M&E Improvement Schemes.
  • Support internal design resources within Design Team to deliver agreed outcomes, scope, on time and to budget.
  • Undertake and manage optioneering and feasibility of design solutions and preparation of whole life costing.
  • Preparation and review of contract documentation.
  • Work with the Connect Plus Services (CPS) Asset Team to agree achievable Asset Management Forward Plans.
  • Develop and agree briefs with the design team and design suppliers, to cover scope, budget and programme, and to obtain agreement from Asset head for the same.
  • Prepare and submit instructions to design suppliers.
  • Ensure that all designs meet the quality standards required by the DBFO contract and CPS internal standards.
  • Work with the Project Manager to lead the internal reviews during the design phase to ensure that they are timely and appropriate sign off is achieved.
  • Act as key engineering interface between site operations at Dartford and Design & Engineering team.
  • Liaise with National Highways on technical issues and submissions.
  • Liaise internally with other teams within Connect Plus (CP) and CPS as required.
  • Liaise with all statutory bodies/authorities as required – such as Highway Authorities, Planning Authorities and statutory undertakers.
  • Ensure that learning and best practice is captured from the project with the aim of sharing it across the business.
  • Deputise for line manager as required.
  • Live the Connect Plus Services Values.
  • Ensure a relentless focus on Zero Harm, and Safety by Design.
  • Ensure the Principal Designer and delegated duties are met under CDM.
  • Support the delivery of the business’ Sustainability activities.
  • Attend relevant community Forums to represent the Engineering Design team.

About you

Qualifications/ skills/ experience

Essential

  • Relevant vocational qualifications (MEng/MSc/BEng/BSc/HNC and HND).
  • Membership of an appropriate professional institution beneficial (ICE, IET or IMechE).
  • Knowledge of CDM and other H&S legislation.
  • Broad understanding of basic engineering principles for bridge and tunnel construction.
  • Broad knowledge of Quality Management.
  • Proficient IT Skills - Microsoft Office is essential.

Good to have

  • Tunnels or bridge experience design or construction.
  • Asset Management experience.
  • Knowledge of National Highways standards.
  • Experience in a design team and coordinating interfaces with other disciplines.
  • Hold appropriate CSCS card registration.
  • Knowledge of the use of computer design applications.
  • Consultation experience with National Highways, Local Councils, Emergency Services and key stakeholders.
  • Broad skills, knowledge/understanding of other M&E related design areas.
  • Licensed to drive in the UK or with reciprocal agreement.
