Join us in tackling one of the most pressing environmental challenges of our time: water quality. Your work will help protect ecosystems, influence national policy, and secure clean water for future generations. This role is available on a full‑time or part‑time basis and can be based in any of our UK office locations, including Birmingham, Bristol, Derby, Edinburgh, Epsom, Glasgow, London, Oxford, Peterborough, Swansea and Manchester.
Your Role
- As a Water Quality Specialist you will coordinate and deliver water quality investigations for the Water Quality Technical Authority.
- Lead project teams and frameworks, delivering work to an excellent standard and reviewing the output of colleagues.
- Develop trusted relationships with clients, ensuring professional and confident support.
- Support bid preparation and help identify new business opportunities for the team.
- Champion high standards of performance, influencing project development and delivering sustainable outcomes.
- Collaborate effectively with environmental scientists, engineers and planners across AtkinsRéalis.
Key Responsibilities
- Investigate water quality across a range of sectors including the water industry and airports.
- Apply risk assessment methodologies to emerging chemical risks, PFAS and other contaminants.
- Produce technical reports and presentations for clients and regulatory bodies.
- Contribute to strategic projects such as Thames Water, Southern Water, Anglian Water, and airport Regulatory 61 PFAS assessments.
- Participate in cross‑functional projects related to flood management, green infrastructure, climate resilience and natural capital.
Qualifications
- Flexible, prepared to take on new challenges and to learn new skills.
- Experience in water quality data analysis and risk assessment methodologies for the water industry and airport sector.
- Degree or higher in a relevant environmental or science subject; ideally chartered or working towards chartership.
- Strong numerical and data analysis skills, with good writing ability.
- Knowledge of environmental water quality regulation, e.g. Water Framework Directive, Bathing Water Directive, SOAF and SODRP.
- Experience with emerging contaminants such as PFAS and their regulatory assessment.
- Ability to develop innovative approaches in new technical areas and in data‑poor environments.
- Highly self‑motivated, enthusiastic and committed to delivering sustainable outcomes.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills for working with teams, clients and stakeholders.
- Strong organisational skills, able to plan ahead and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Commitment to continual professional development in accordance with professional institute requirements.

Additional Information – Security Clearance
This role may require security clearance. Offers of employment will be dependent on obtaining the relevant level of clearance. The vetting process is delivered by United Kingdom Security Vetting (UKSV) and may require proof of UK residency for 5 years or longer.
