An opportunity has arisen for a Radiological Protection Engineer within AtkinsRéalis’ expanding Decommissioning Services team. The successful candidate will report to Senior Engineer/RPA and will take a leading role in the radiological protection aspects of the projects on which Decommissioning Services are engaged.

The RP specific work on projects currently being delivered include:

  • The provision of high-level technical advice to client sites.
  • Detailed technical design and review of products, technology and processes including modification of RP arrangements.
  • The provision of RP support and oversight of practical delivery of operational decommissioning work (e.g. size reduction of redundant components etc.).
  • While the main roles and responsibilities will be based around radiological protection, there will be significant crossover with radioactive waste, therefore flexibility is essential.

Your role project specific responsibilities will vary, but high-level responsibilities are listed below:

  • Take a leading role within the Radiological Protection team, acting as the responsible point of contact for radiological protection on project work, providing expert-level advice, support and guidance on radiological issues across defined projects.
  • Support in the development of Project Execution Plans to ensure a fit-for-purpose approach is taken to each project.
  • Seeking out potential innovations to projects and advising clients and/or project teams on lean delivery options.
  • Directing and supporting Graduate and Assistant RP Engineers and other junior staff as required to meet project aims and their personal development targets.
  • Developing RP arrangements for projects, including documentation such as: Risk Assessments, Radiological Design Document, Critical Examinations, Dose Estimates, Local Rules & Contingency Plans, Investigation reports.
  • Review of radiological monitoring data for operational packages of work.
  • Liaise with inspectors and regulators during audits and investigations as required.
  • Delivery of ALARP assessments.
  • Support BAT assessments and other optioning processes.
  • Advise on radioactive waste aspects of project as required with support from other specialists, if necessary.

About you qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant subject, or demonstrable equivalent ability and experience. Equivalent qualifications will be considered.
  • Appropriate membership of professional body.

Essential Criteria:

  • Significant experience in operational radiological protection; quality of experience is more relevant than the number of years.
  • Evidence of providing advice on compliance with IRR’17 (and/or IRR’99).
  • Able to lead teams within RP discipline.
  • Able to work within a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Able to delegate to, direct and support junior staff in their work and development.
  • Able to effectively manage stakeholders.
  • Able to technically justify approaches and see those through to successful implementation on plant.
  • Able to produce high quality, concise technical reports.
  • Able to influence others to implement improvements.
  • Able to work without supervision, including managing own workload.
  • Able to use standard Microsoft Office tools effectively.
  • Able to obtain an SC security clearance.
  • Able to travel.
  • Hold a full driving license.

Desirable Criteria:

  • Experience of decommissioning.
  • Experience of managing teams.
  • Experience of developing or aiding Safety Case development.
  • RPA portfolio in development (RPA certification not required).
