As part of the Net Zero agenda, networks have a crucial role in delivering the renewable energy which is required to be connected. The transmission network operators have secured c.£8bn as part of the RIIO T2 package. This is an opportunity to work at the forefront of the energy sector, to deliver outstanding projects and be part of the solution to delivering Net Zero. Our team is currently delivering work across the Transmission and Distribution sectors across the UK as well as supporting other Energy and infrastructure business sectors. We are in a position where we need to grow our team to enhance our capability and strengthen our service offering. As such we are recruiting a Civil/Structural Principal Engineer to join our Power and Energy Solutions Practice.
Your role: As a Principal Engineer you will be responsible for engineering design and management, leading a team to deliver high-quality solutions while ensuring compliance with project and company requirements. You will be based either in Birmingham, Leeds, or Glasgow. Provide technical leadership and assurance across a growing portfolio of Front End and Detailed Design projects for AIS/GIS HV Substations (up to 400kV), HVDC converter stations etc. Building strong and trusted relationships is a key part of this role. You’ll enjoy working with others, sometimes directly at client sites, sometimes from our offices. Provide Technical Leadership on the FEED and Detail Design workstreams for transmission or distribution network operators. Ensuring compliance with Grid standards. Leading discipline improvement initiatives and tools development.
About you: You have a proven track record of leading others to produce complex designs and drawings to applicable engineering codes and standards. You are comfortable working in new and changing environments and have a desire to contribute to the success of the business. You are comfortable liaising with stakeholders at all levels both internally and externally.
Key skills and attributes:
- Degree qualified.
- Master’s degree (MEng/MSc) qualified Civil or Structural Engineer.
- Chartered Engineer and a Member of ICE or IStructE is desirable.
- Track record of leading teams in the delivery of Front-End Engineering and design or Detailed Design of EHV (33kV-400kV) substation projects.
- Experience of discharging Principal Designer duties in accordance with CDM2015 is desirable but not mandatory.
- Strong understanding of regulatory requirements, safety standards, and environmental compliance.
- Strong technical background, with experience of steel and reinforced concrete design using industry recognised software, relevant UK and international codes/standards.
- An appreciation of delivery and assurance of technically compliant design deliverables in accordance with the input requirements, and ability to identify design issues.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and innovation skills.
- Exceptional communication and organisational abilities.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and work collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary environment.
- Customer-focused mindset and capability to deliver results within budget and timelines.
- Currently hold BP141 / TP141 HV Substation qualification (or equivalent), or have knowledge and experience to do so.
- Currently working as a LCDAE or CDAE, or have knowledge and experience to do so.
- Maintain existing and develop new client relationships.
- Experience in coaching and developing junior engineers/designers.
- Flexibility to travel to client sites when required.
- Capability to work under tight deadlines while achieving objectives with the ability to deal with competing priorities and manage time appropriately.
