The AtkinsRéalis’ Traffic Control Systems (TCS) team works across the transport sector to help clients navigate a rapidly changing world, linking current traffic signals and Intelligent Transport Systems with future‑focused technology opportunities. We take on design, implementation, consultancy and advisory projects for a broad set of UK and international clients, including the Department for Transport, National Highways and UK local authorities. Within the Intelligent Transport & Infrastructure (ITI) practice, TCS includes approximately fifteen staff delivering market‑leading capability in traffic signals, Urban Traffic Control (UTC) and operations.
As a Traffic Control Systems Engineer, you will be a key part of our dynamic team, delivering high‑quality world‑class projects to clients across the UK. Based from one of our offices in Bristol, Birmingham, Epsom or Nottingham, this role offers hybrid working and, where required, short‑term travel to develop schemes across the UK and overseas.
Key Responsibilities- Undertake the successful delivery of traffic signal and ITS schemes from inception to operation, including detailed design, FAT, SAT and validation.
- Liaise with clients to provide technical advice and solutions, develop opportunities and progress project delivery.
- Assist and guide less experienced staff on technical delivery and project management.
- Deliver high‑quality technical reports and presentations.
- Develop commercial knowledge and understanding, including preparation of cost estimates and scopes.
- Manage projects, monitoring budgets, raising risks and resolving issues.
- Work both as part of a team and individually, monitoring own work and others’ work to ensure delivery to budget, time and quality.

- Knowledge of design processes and best practice, traffic signals/highways design and traffic signal operation.

- Proven ability to learn new skills, understand complex technical projects and seek out new opportunities.
- Good communication skills, including presentations and client meetings, and effective at developing positive working relationships.
- Ability to deliver outputs on multiple projects for various clients.
- Strong awareness of health and safety issues and CDM.
- Either already a member of or keen to become a member of a relevant professional institute and obtain professional registration; opportunities for personal development and achieving professional registration, leading to chartership, are provided.
