Job Description Overview

Shape the future of cities and environments by leading aviation projects as an Aviation Technical Director in AtkinsRéalis' Design & Advanced Technology Practice. This strategic leadership role covers the UK Airports Team and international aviation portfolio, focusing on complex airport projects such as Heathrow, Gatwick, Dublin, and Manchester.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic leadership on complex UK and international airport commissions, acting as Project Director or Technical Lead.
  • Lead and oversee design delivery across all project phases, ensuring quality assurance and technical governance.
  • Balance hands‑on design involvement with strategic oversight, adapting based on project needs.
  • Forecast project demand, identify capability gaps, and develop succession pipelines within the airports team.
  • Mentor and develop aviation design teams, fostering a high‑performing, collaborative culture.
  • Recommend and drive improvements to processes, services, and technical practices while maintaining robust engineering governance.
  • Build and maintain relationships with key aviation clients and stakeholders, representing the business in senior-level meetings.
  • Act as a trusted advisor to airport operators, regulators and stakeholders to secure repeat business.
  • Support identification, pursuit, and securing of international aviation opportunities, contributing to bids, proposals and strategic positioning in new markets.
  • Take projects from opportunity through to successful delivery, shaping opportunity pipelines and supporting market strategy.

Qualifications

  • Relevant degree, with a postgraduate qualification in air transport or related field desirable.
  • Professional membership of a relevant institution.
  • Extensive professional experience in airport planning or airfield civil engineering, with deep understanding of airfield planning, surface access, pavement and airport infrastructure design.
  • Proven track record of leading large, complex multidisciplinary aviation projects delivering high‑quality outcomes on time and within budget.
  • Clear history of successful client relationship management, leading bids, winning work and growing client accounts.
  • Strong commercial awareness and experience shaping winning proposals and driving practice or business growth.
  • Ability to influence senior client and stakeholder decision‑making and manage risk.
  • Comfortable operating at both strategic and technical levels in a fast‑paced consultancy environment.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
