AtkinsRéalis are at the forefront of active travel design and delivery, leading the way through standards and guidance production, research and the development of in‑house tools and processes to facilitate some of the most high‑quality active travel infrastructure schemes across the UK. Key clients include Department for Infrastructure, Transport for Wales, National Highways, as well as numerous local authority clients across the UK.

This role is to support the growth and development of our active travel team across the UK and to be a key part of our wider UK team providing technical excellence in this field. The role will focus primarily on the design and delivery of active travel infrastructure projects of varying complexity across the UK via our existing significant and recent local authority framework wins.

We will expect you to promote a multi‑disciplinary approach to active travel and help shape and develop our local offering with key clients. You will play a key role in supporting the wider team to continually improve our client offering. There will also be opportunities to support other national and international high‑profile projects including design standards and guidance production, innovation and research projects.

The role is to be based in any of our UK offices, with occasional travel to other offices and project locations across the UK expected.

Your role

  • Engagement with active travel representatives across our transportation business.
  • Production of task briefs, resourcing schedules and project plans for active travel design projects.
  • Supporting technical projects with responsibility for high quality project deliverables.
  • Client relationship management and positioning.
  • Ad‑hoc advice for internal and external clients regarding active travel design projects.
  • Assisting the wider Transportation team with larger, complex projects such as UK standard, policy and guidance document updates.
  • Assisting with business development across the UK for active travel and closely related disciplines.
  • Assistance with coaching and training of junior/graduate level staff.
  • Assistance with technical training delivery.
  • Managing stakeholder engagement processes as required.

About you

  • Degree qualified in a relevant subject (Civil Engineering or similar).
  • A strong background in active travel design and scheme delivery.
  • Strong client relationships and the ability to build on these, including the ability to influence at all levels.
  • Significant experience of active travel infrastructure design projects.
  • A high level of technical awareness of active travel standards, research, policies and best practice.
  • Experience of using UK standards and guidance documents– such as Active Travel Act Guidance, Cycling by Design, LTN 1/20 and DMRB.
  • An ability to devise and present initial and innovative solutions to complex active travel problems.
  • Proven experience of work‑winning in a competitive environment.
  • Experience of supporting larger pieces of technical work such as town or city‑wide design programmes, including managing and prioritising own workload and that of others.
  • A good understanding of the UK transportation market and geography, with an emphasis on local authority clients.
  • The ability to be flexible in terms of project delivery and working locations.
  • Ability to manage multiple stakeholder and client relationships.
  • Excellent IT skills.
  • Membership of relevant technical institutions – e.g. ICE, CIHT, CILT.
  • Evidence of CPD relating to active travel infrastructure design.

Desirable criteria

  • Ability to support the delivery of technical training seminars.
  • Experience of public and stakeholder engagement events.
  • Experience in developing national policy and strategy documents and/or technical standards and guidance.
  • Experience of road safety engineering, road safety audit or risk assessment.
  • Site supervision experience related to active travel schemes.
  • GG 142 Lead Assessor experience.

The ideal candidate will be comfortable working with clients and stakeholders across the UK and able to work collaboratively with an existing team of highly motivated active travel professionals.
