We are looking for an experienced Specialist Learning Support Worker to join our Learner Support team. You will support D/deaf learners with additional learning difficulties and disabilities in all aspects of their College programmes using various communication methods.

Responsibilities

  • Supporting deaf learners both directly and indirectly in the learners preferred mode of communication (e.g. sign language, lip-reading and note taking) and by implementing a variety of appropriate support strategies.
  • With guidance from the lecturing staff, supporting learners in tutor designated activities in the teaching situation on an individual or group basis as directed by the Head of Additional Learner Support.
  • Helping organise student files.
  • Focusing the learner on the instructions and meaning of the learning activity and ensuring the learner understands the task in hand.
  • Promoting confidence, motivating and providing guidance and encouragement to the learner in whatever activities they are undertaking.
  • Encouraging the learner to integrate into the learning group.
  • Acting as a second authoritative figure in the classroom at appropriate times.
  • Ensuring learners are up to date with their work and liaising with the tutors to identify gaps and assisting in getting the learner to meet targets.
  • Contributing to record keeping systems for students with learning support.

Qualifications

  • Level 2 British Sign Language or equivalent
  • Level 2 qualifications in English and Maths
  • Experience of supporting D/deaf students in educational settings, particularly Further Education
  • Experience of keeping and maintaining records
  • Ability to adapt signing skills to meet the needs of D/deaf learners

Day-to-day you will be responsible for supporting deaf learners in the learners preferred mode of communication and ensuring the learner understands the task at hand, with effective support strategies.

Safeguarding

You will be committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and adults at risk, and will therefore be required to undergo an enhanced DBS check.
