Job purpose
The Food Safety & Quality Specialist (UK) is responsible for managing and maintaining UK food safety and quality systems to ensure full compliance with BRCGS standards and customer requirements. This role acts as the primary UK quality contact for audits, customer complaints, and quality system activities including internal audits, working closely with the FSQS and QA team, and customers to support consistent food safety and quality execution.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Audit Management & Compliance
- Act as the primary UK contact for all customer and certification audits.
- Prepare for, coordinate, and support all UK customer and third-party audits (including BRCGS).
- Conduct internal audits and ensure all internal audit activities are completed, documented, and closed within agreed timelines.
- Review non-conformances identified during external and third-party audits, as well as those identified through internal audits.
- Work with key stakeholders to identify root causes, develop corrective actions, and implement required changes.
- Track, verify, and confirm effective closure of audit non-conformances and corrective actions.
- Food Safety & Quality Systems
- Oversee and maintain the UK Quality Management System in alignment with BRCGS, customer, and company requirements.
- Act as the main contact for UK policies, procedures, and quality system documentation, ensuring accuracy, version control, and compliance.
- Support accreditation activities and respond to quality alerts as required.
- Ensure UK 3PL sites operate in accordance with approved food safety programs and documented procedures.
- Traceability, Recall & Incident Management
- Participate in annual mock recall exercises and traceability tests, with documented outcomes and timely follow-up where gaps are identified.
- Undertake additional traceability exercises when required by customers, auditors, or leadership.
- Participate in product recalls or withdrawals when required, supporting investigation, documentation, and communication activities.
- Support incident investigations and contribute to root cause analysis and corrective actions related to food safety and quality events.
- Customer Complaints & Performance Monitoring
- Lead UK customer complaint handling, including investigations and reporting.
- Communicate directly with Quality teams at the relevant manufacturing sites to ensure timely, thorough investigations and clear closure with the customer.
- Trend complaint data and identify recurring issues or risks.
- Liaise directly with customers to investigate complaints, clarify requirements, and support resolution.
- Track and report complaint performance metrics for key customers (e.g., Tesco, Asda, Morrisons, CO-OP).
- Cross-Functional Collaboration & Communication
- Lead monthly product cuttings to assess product quality against established standards, and report findings to Senior Leadership and site Quality Management.
- Work closely with FSQS, Operations, Supply Chain, Sales, and Technical teams to support food safety and quality objectives.
- Attend customer meetings, webinars, and training sessions as required and provide updates to internal stakeholders.
- Coordinate and support customer visits, including agendas, documentation, and follow-up actions.
- Support the Sales team with store visits, sample collection, cuttings, and customer product analysis as needed.
- Continuous Improvement & Capability Development
- Identify opportunities to improve UK quality systems, audit readiness, and customer performance.
- Support benchmarking activities and internal or external quality panels.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives related to food safety systems, customer compliance, and audit outcomes.
- General Responsibilities
- Maintain accurate records and documentation in line with company and regulatory requirements.
- Support training activities related to quality systems and customer requirements when required.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support the effectiveness of the UK FSQS function.
- Follow Health and Safety rules and regulations.
- Must follow Good Manufacturing Practices, Food Safety, and Food Defense guidelines.
- Comply with all Company policies and procedures.
Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science (Food Science) degree or Science related degree or diploma (e.g., chemistry, microbiology).
- Minimum 2 years of experience in food safety management in food manufacturing.
- Must have detailed experience and training in internal auditing and food safety systems in a manufacturing environment against at least one GFSI Benchmarked food safety standard (BRC preferred).
- Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint, with the ability to create and manage documents, spreadsheets, email communications, and presentations effectively.
- Expertise in managing food safety systems, and due diligence tracking with UK/EU standards.
- Internal audit training and demonstratable, practical experience.
- Experience writing SOPs.
