As a Research Engineer you will be part of our Research team. The Research Department is responsible for undertaking technical research to support the development and deployment of SMT’s CAE Software portfolio and SMT’s Engineering Services delivery.

In This Role You Will:

  • Research and prototype applications to SMT’s MASTA software and internal processes.
  • Research potential new areas and methods for CAE simulation for drivelines (or beyond) via some of the technical skills below:
    • Writing python code that interfaces with MASTA via its API
    • Implementing new functionality into MASTA directly
    • Data collection and analysis
    • Using some or all SMT’s MASTA software.
    • Using commercial CAE & CAD software.
  • Research new Engineering methods, procedures and workflow efficiencies.
  • Provide sales and marketing support via technical case studies, attending conferences, and publishing of academic papers.
  • Support the testing of new SMT software functionalities.
  • Help SMT’s software products technical support team to disseminate knowledge to customers. This includes attending and providing resource for some SMT client technical training sessions (virtual or in person at SMT UK or client sites).
  • Provide technical support and resource for client Engineering projects.

The role will be based at SMT’s Head Office in Nottingham.

What You’ll Need To Succeed:

  • Master’s Degree in a numerical science (strong 2:1 or higher) with strong analytical skills. (PhD desirable but not essential)
  • Be a conscientious team player with the ability to foster good working relationships.
  • Be self‑motivated and able to drive own research projects.
  • Have an attention to detail to ensure accuracy and thoroughness in your work.
  • Have good presentation skills to be able to clearly communicate your work. Training and guidance will be provided so that you can excel in this area.
  • Knowledge and experience of electric drivelines and their components is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge and experience of programming languages including Python and Python packages including Pandas, Matplotlib, SciPy.
  • Experience with C# and .NET is desirable but not essential.
  • Knowledge and experience of CAD, FEA & MBD software such as SolidWorks, ANSYS, MSC Adams is desirable but not essential.
