Trainee Water Hygiene Engineer Permanent Reading: Up to £25,000 base salary + OTE & double rate overtime Field based. Looking for a hands-on role that makes a difference? At SMS Environmental, we don’t just maintain water systems — we protect people’s health and keep environments safe from Legionella and other water hygiene risks. If you’re ready to begin your journey as a Trainee Water Hygiene Engineer, with full training and support to help you succeed, we’d love to welcome you to the team.

What will I be doing? You’ll be out on the road, visiting a variety of client sites — from hospitals and schools to commercial and industrial settings — making sure their water systems are compliant, clean, and safe. Your day-to-day will include:

  • Carrying out planned preventative maintenance (PPM), sampling, flushing, disinfecting, and chemical treatment of water systems
  • Performing remedial works, tank cleans, and chlorination
  • Ensuring compliance with ACOP L8, HSG274, and other water hygiene regulations
  • Recording and reporting site activities accurately using company systems
  • Spotting and reporting system issues before they become bigger problems
  • Representing SMS Environmental professionally with clients on-site

What do I need to be successful? We’re looking for someone who:

  • Communicates clearly and professionally with clients and colleagues
  • Is willing to learn, take guidance, and build confidence working both independently and as part of a team
  • Can manage their time well and follow instructions
  • Holds a full UK driving licence (or is working towards one, if applicable)
  • Is able to pass Disclosure and Barring Service clearance (Enhanced DBS check)
