  • Engage appropriate stakeholders and program managers to ensure collaboration in development and full implementation of HSE policies and procedures to ensure regulatory and company-wide policy compliance.
  • Lead and embed a high performing HSE culture across our UK and Ireland operations.
  • Develop training and audit/inspection tools to support robust site HSE program.

Support regional specific HSE processes and procedures in support of company-wide initiatives and direction.

  • Develop and implement plans, processes and procedures to ensure conformance with regulatory OSHA, ISO 14001 & OHSAS 45001 certifications and company requirements and initiatives at all UK and Europe sites
  • Support the UK HQ with ensuring it meets its EHS legislative requirements.
  • Perform the site security controller duties. Must have Security Clearance or the ability to obtain this.
  • Drive continuous improvement in HSE performance for the Uk and Ireland operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Advise site management team on HSE compliance requirements for our manufacturing site and service repair shop.

Provide leadership and subject matter expertise that ensures appropriate HSE systems are in place.

Coach site teams to improve HSE performance and engagement.

  • Manage and track site HSE Key Performance Indicators and drive site continuous improvement toward goals.

Support problem resolution and provide leadership and guidance for the Site.

  • Ensure the timely & accurate reporting and investigation of HSE performance data and incidents.
  • Drive proactive safety culture across the UK.
  • Instigate and review vetting submissions and associated documentation and advise on overseas travel requests.
  • Chair Key Security meeting on site.
  • Ensure that site specific environmental targets are analysed, met and challenged for improvement.
  • Support site execution of tactical initiatives in order to eliminate hazards and risks. Drive continuous HSE performance improvement.
  • Continuously assess HSE hazards and risks and assist where specific technical expertise is required to meet local regulations or company policies, procedures and programs.
  • Plan and direct HSE activities and programs; establish priority for project execution based upon site resources and cost of implementation.
  • Actively participate in the investigation of significant HSE incidents and ensure timely and complete implementation of corrective actions.
  • Lead external registration and surveillance audit schedules for ISO 14001 & OHSAS 18001 (45001) with selected certifying body or registrar.
  • Develop and deliver specific site focused HSE training and education.
  • Develop the managements understanding of HSE issues and their role in mitigation
  • Act as a key channel for ensuring timely communication of significant site activities and events.
  • Support field service-based staff if required on HSE topics.
  • Prepare monthly submission for Global Smiths Detection HSE monthly call including best practice. Analyse trends for improvement.
  • Support emergency preparedness and response planning
  • Operate the safety management system for site and support the site strategy execution.
  • Assist the Smiths Detection European sites where specific technical expertise is required to meet local regulations or company policies, procedures and programs.

  • Technical Knowledge and Skills
  • 5-8 years HSE experience in operational environments
  • Experience with ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 systems. Awareness of ISO 27001 and its application.
  • Strong leadership and influencing skills
  • Excellent communication and analytical ability
  • Previous experience with security regulations in a highly regulated global matrix organisation advantageous.
  • Possession of strong organisational skills
  • Demonstrated ability in leading change and improving HSE culture
  • Demonstrated leadership and vision in managing projects/initiatives in a matrix environment
  • Ability to delegate and manage multiple responsibilities effectively
  • Ability to challenge and debate issues of importance to the organisation with diplomacy
