We have an exciting opportunity for a Mechanical Engineer to join the UK Regional Engineering team reporting to the Regional Engineering Manager. As a Mechanical Engineer you will provide direct engineering support to our UK Sales and Service teams, with a focus on winning new business and supporting OEM and End User customers. This role involves product selection and analysis in line with JC Global Engineering guidelines, using a variety of engineering tools. You will be responsible for supporting our wet seal, wet seal system, and coupling products throughout the full lifecycle—from order and design through to delivery and in-service support.
Key responsibilities include:
- Providing technical guidance for proposals, orders, retrofits, and aftermarket activities.
- Supporting troubleshooting, commissioning, and root cause analysis (RCA) of field issues.
- Working closely with Sales, Aftermarket, Engineering Solutions, and other internal functions.
- Maintaining strong customer relationships, ensuring technical excellence, and driving business success.
This role is based from our site within Manchester working Monday to Friday normal office hours.

Duties & Responsibilities (not limited to):
- Undertake technical product selections and provide product selection guidance to UK Sales.
- Analysis of customer specifications to advise technical solutions adapted to their needs.
- Support the progress of order providing technical support, clarifications, and analysis through to delivery.
- Guide application design and undertake 2D/3D design & drawing work when required.
- Undertake hands-on product inspection, RCA and laboratory testing in support of OEM orders and Aftermarket customers when required.
- Engage directly with customers via meetings, site visits and written technical reports as and when required.
- Provide supporting technical justification for decisions through use of analysis, calculation, and John Crane Engineering best practices.
- Adhere to all Smiths business, ethics, health & safety policies at all times.
- Report to his/her manager any situation deemed dangerous in relation to safety and/or the environment.
Qualifications:
- Degree qualified Engineer, BEng, MEng or equivalent, maybe enhanced by working toward professional membership / chartership – e.g. MIMechE, CEng.
- Working Knowledge of Engineering tools; 2D/3D design and drafting (SolidEdge), FEA (CSTEDY/ANSYS) and Engineering calculations.
- Broad awareness of Engineering principles, for example mechanics, thermodynamics and tribology.
- Passion and drive to develop and progress as an Engineer, take opportunities for continued learning and additional responsibility.
- Practical Engineering Skills Desirable– product assembly/disassembly.
- Professional skills; Project management, Customer orientation, Teamwork, Ownership.
