Smiths has grown from a single owner-operated plant hire company to a multifaceted group with family values still firmly at the heart of each project undertaken. With depots in Avonmouth, Cardiff, Gloucester, Stonehouse and Tewkesbury we operate predominately across the South-West of England. We specialist in Construction, Waste Management, Plant Hire, Demolition and Transport Operations.
We are now looking for an experienced Operations Manager to join our Plant Hire division.
Job Purpose:
As the Plant Hire Operations Manager you will be responsible for overseeing and managing the daily operations of the plant hire division, ensuring efficient, safe, and profitable delivery of equipment and machinery hire services to clients. This role involves managing the fleet, coordinating logistics, maintaining high standards of customer service, and leading the operations team.
Key Responsibilities:
- Oversee day-to-day operations of the plant hire division, ensuring all equipment and machinery are efficiently deployed and maintained.
- Coordinate quarry operations, including scheduling, resource planning, and compliance with health, safety, and environmental standards.
- Plan and manage plant hire projects from initiation to completion, ensuring they are delivered on time, within budget, and to the required quality standards.
- Lead, supervise, and motivate plant operators and other operational staff, ensuring high levels of performance and engagement.
- Manage Operator schedules, training, and development to ensure a skilled and reliable workforce.
- Conduct performance reviews, identify skills gaps, and implement training plans.
- Ensure compliance with all relevant health and safety regulations, quarry regulations, and company policies.
- Promote a strong safety culture across all operational activities, including regular safety audits and toolbox talks.
- Maintain accurate records of inspections, incidents, and maintenance.
- Monitor and manage the plant fleet including crushers and screeners, including maintenance schedules, repairs, and replacement planning.
Key Skills & Qualifications:
- Proven experience in operations management within plant hire, construction equipment, or related industries.
- Strong leadership and people management skills.
- Excellent organisational and problem-solving abilities.
- Good understanding of fleet maintenance and logistics.
- Strong customer service and communication skills.
- Good IT skills, including familiarity with fleet management or hire management systems.
- Knowledge of relevant health and safety regulations.
- Full UK driving licence
