Smiths has grown from a single owner-operated plant hire company to a multifaceted group with family values still firmly at the heart of each project undertaken. With depots in Avonmouth, Cardiff, Gloucester, Stonehouse and Tewkesbury we operate predominately across the South-West of England. We specialise in Construction, Waste Management, Plant Hire, Demolition and Transport operations.
The Weighbridge Operator is responsible for the accurate recording, monitoring, and control of all vehicle movements entering and leaving the waste management facility. This role ensures compliance with environmental permits, waste classification regulations, and internal operational procedures while delivering a high standard of customer service to drivers, customers, and contractors.
Responsibilities for the job role:
- Operate the weighbridge system to accurately record all inbound and outbound vehicle weights.
- Ensure correct completion of all weighbridge tickets, duty of care documentation, and transfer notes.
- Verify waste streams against permits, licences, and site acceptance criteria.
- Maintain accurate records within internal systems (e.g., weighbridge software, spreadsheets, and waste tracking systems).
- Coordinate vehicle movements to optimise site traffic flow and minimise delays.
- Communicate with plant operatives and site management regarding incoming loads and priorities.
- Raise any discrepancies in weights, documentation, or material types immediately.
Compliance & Regulation
- Ensure compliance with Environmental Permitting Regulations (EPR).
- Duty of Care requirements under the Environmental Protection Act 1990.
- Waste Transfer Note (WTN) and Hazardous Waste Consignment Note requirements.
- Check waste carrier licences and customer account details where required.
- Identify and escalate non-compliant or hazardous loads in line with site procedures.
- Maintain audit-ready records for internal and external inspections (e.g., Environment Agency audits).
Customer & Driver Interaction
- Act as the first point of contact for all site visitors, drivers, and customers.
- Provide clear instructions regarding site rules, tipping locations, and safety requirements.
- Ensure all drivers comply with PPE requirements and site safety procedures.
- Resolve minor queries professionally and escalate issues where necessary.
Health & Safety
- Promote a strong health and safety culture on site.
- Ensure all entrants comply with site safety rules and traffic management plans.
- Report incidents, near misses, or unsafe conditions promptly.
- Monitor site access and prevent unauthorised entry.
Administration & Reporting
- Maintain accurate logs of vehicle movements, waste types, and volumes.
- Produce daily, weekly, and monthly reports as required.
- Assist with data input for environmental reporting and internal KPIs.
- Support stock control and material volume reporting where applicable.
