Smiths has grown from a single owner-operated plant hire company to a multifaceted group with family values still firmly at the heart of each project undertaken. With depots in Avonmouth, Cardiff, Gloucester, Stonehouse and Tewkesbury we operate predominately across the South-West of England. We specialise in Construction, Waste Management, Plant Hire, Demolition and Transport operations.

Job Purpose? As Senior Quantity Surveyor, you will be responsible for managing the financial and contractual aspects of the projects that you work on. You will ensure strong cost control, drive profitability, mitigate risk, and maintain and develop excellent client relationships. This is a senior role that requires leadership and responsibility for multiple ongoing contracts.

Responsibilities for the job role:

  • Maintain and develop client relationships.
  • Work closely with Contracts Managers, Site Teams, Estimators and all other stakeholders.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant legislation and company policies.
  • Understand and comply with the prevailing Contract(s).
  • Lead on contract administration, identify and correct any non-compliant issues, including dispute resolution.
  • Attend internal and external meetings associated with projects.
  • Oversee the full commercial lifecycle of projects from tender to final account.
  • Undertake regular site visits.
  • Prepare & submit accurate periodic valuations.
  • Liaise with Client Teams to ensure that payments are received on time.
  • Produce and update accurate cash flow forecasts.
  • Manage, lead and agree change management on projects, including the identification of Variations / Compensation Events, preparing quotations and estimates in accordance with prevailing contract conditions.
  • Ensure accurate cost control, forecasting, and budget management, ensuring appropriate procedures are followed to achieve and maintain expected project margins.
  • Monitor, manage and mitigate project risks.
  • Working with the project team, review programmes and progress. Develop target programmes and strategies to avoid project delays or create opportunities.
  • Appoint and manage Subcontractors, including drafting necessary forms of Subcontract.
  • Prepare and authorise subcontract payments.
  • Support tender submissions and develop pricing strategies.
  • Help build a scalable commercial team aligned with future business growth.
  • Mentor and support junior team members.
  • Build strong relationships with key suppliers and subcontractors to enhance project delivery and efficiency.
