Smiths has grown from a single owner-operated plant hire company to a multifaceted group with family values still firmly at the heart of each project undertaken. With depots in Avonmouth, Cardiff, Gloucester, Stonehouse and Tewkesbury we operate predominately across the South-West of England. We specialise in Construction, Waste Management, Plant Hire, Demolition and Transport operations.
The Earthworks, Crushing & Screening Contracts Manager is responsible for the successful commercial, operational and contractual delivery of earthworks projects, along with the day‑to‑day management of the Crushing and Screening operations, from award through to completion and final account. The role ensures all earthworks and crushing & screening activities are delivered safely, efficiently, on programme, to specification and within budget, while maintaining high standards of quality, environmental compliance and client satisfaction.
The position provides leadership to site teams and plant operations, manages subcontractors, suppliers and self‑delivered plant, oversees risk and change control, and plays a key role in protecting and improving contract and plant margins, maximising utilisation and ensuring full compliance across all activities.
Responsibilities for the job role:- Take full ownership of allocated earthworks contracts from tender handover through to completion and final account.
- Manage the day‑to‑day operation of the crushing and screening plant hire activities, ensuring safe, compliant and efficient delivery across sites.
- Review contract documents, drawings, plant scopes and specifications to ensure full understanding and compliance.
- Develop and maintain project execution plans, programmes and plant deployment schedules, aligning earthworks and processing operations.
- Manage mobilisation, site setup, production activities, demobilisation and close‑out of projects and plant operations.
- Ensure contractual obligations are met and operational risks (including plant availability, productivity and breakdowns) are proactively managed.
