An exciting opportunity has arisen for a competent and experienced analytical chemist with proven line management experience to join the Ecotoxicology Analytical team, part of the Chemistry department within the Environmental Risk Sciences (ERS) division of Smithers, based in Harrogate. Smithers ERS Limited provides a wide range of environmental safety testing services for the pharmaceutical, agricultural, industrial and specialty chemical, and personal care industries. Our team includes experienced scientists and technicians offering a broad range of skills and areas of expertise. This role is ideal for an individual looking to apply their technical expertise in analytical chemistry while also leading and supporting a team of analysts.

The successful candidate will play a key part in delivering high-quality data for ecotoxicology studies, contributing to the development and implementation of robust analytical methods, and fostering a collaborative and efficient team environment. Reporting to the Director of Chemistry, the individual will be in a Team Leader role working as part of an established team, providing leadership and technical expertise to the Ecotoxicology Analytical group. The incumbent will act as liaison between the relevant stakeholders, mentor and train team members, and drive compliance. All work will be conducted in compliance with applicable regulatory requirements, and specifically those regulations (GLP) specified in the study plans, protocols, or work agreements governing the work in which they are involved.

Responsibilities

  • Help and advise study directors to overcome analytical challenges
  • Drive quality and innovation as part of a problem-solving culture
  • Preparation of study plans and reports for allocated studies
  • Deliver high-quality data efficiently and accurately, supporting the needs of our clients
  • Play an integral role in maintaining and organizing laboratory resources and equipment
  • Work closely with a team of experienced scientists in a dynamic and collaborative environment
  • Provide technical support and excellence across the department
  • Line management of assigned staff including performance reviews and goal setting

Qualifications and Experience

  • Minimum BSc or equivalent in Chemistry, or a related subject
  • Relevant practical experience in a CRO environment, including working with quality systems (GLP, GMP)
  • Demonstrated experience in delivering scientific services, including OTD, Client Focus and Scheduling and Maximising Utilisation
  • Excellent ability to problem solve, IT skills, motivation, communication and organizational skills.
