Smith Institute is looking for a Finance Manager to join our team, on a part-time, permanent basis. Would you like to join a team of inspiring people? We're looking for a proactive Finance Manager to join our outstanding team. Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, providing hands-on financial oversight, supporting sustainable growth and operational efficiency ambitions. The role will be part-time, initially working 3 days a week, to increase to 3.5 days a week.
Your role
- Provide hands-on financial oversight, supporting sustainable growth and operational efficiency ambitions.
Responsibilities
- Management reporting: Prepare high quality monthly reporting packs for both the Executive and the Board.
- General ledger management: Maintain and reconcile the general ledger accounts including bank accounts, accruals, prepayments, payroll postings (payroll is outsourced), fixed assets and deferred/accrued income.
- Oversee month-end and year-end closing processes.
- Budgeting & forecasting: Assist in preparing annual budget and monthly financial forecasts. Monitor variances and provide analysis to support business decisions.
- Tax & compliance: Ensure compliance with HMRC and statutory requirements. Prepare and submit VAT and PSA filings; Prepare financial data for inclusion in annual R&D tax claims; Monitor cash flow and working capital requirements.
- Audit & internal controls: Ensure timely and accurate reporting and provision of documents to external auditors; Implement and maintain robust internal controls to safeguard assets.
Qualifications and experience
- Education: ACA, ACCA, or CIMA qualified (or equivalent).
- Experience: Minimum 3-5 years of post-qualification experience, preferably in a service-based SME or similar environment. Strong knowledge of accounting principles and financial regulations.
- Skills: Proficiency in accounting software (preferably Xero and add on tools such as Dext) and MS Excel. Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills. Strong attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines.
