About the role
Smith Institute would like to appoint a friendly and approachable Information Communications Technician apprentice to join a busy team responsible for business systems, infrastructure and computing in a rapidly evolving IT environment. The IT Apprentice supports the work of the IT Manager while actively gaining new knowledge and skills.
Compensation and benefits
The organisation offers 12% pension contributions, up to a 15% bonus yearly, and 25 days holiday per year (pro‑rated).
Training
Training course: Information Communications Technician (Level 3). Apprentice will study to gain professional knowledge and skills. Apprenticeships include time away from working for specialist training and will provide block weeks in an online training room once every quarter, weekly off‑the‑job training and monthly coaching sessions. This is a Level 3 qualification. The successful candidate will undertake a 22‑month, nationally recognised qualification.
Hours and duration
Hours: Monday – Friday, shifts to be confirmed. 37 hours 30 minutes a week. Duration: 1 year 10 months.
Responsibilities
- Provide timely support to colleagues in person, by email, and using remote access tools.
- Configure and maintain company laptops and phones.
- Ensure that office IT equipment is always available and fit for use.
- Assist the Business Systems Manager, Head of Computing and Digital Solutions Engineers with day‑to‑day operations.
- Help monitor and maintain cyber security across the systems.
- Assist the IT Manager and Computer Systems Manager in supporting the Institute’s day‑to‑day operations.
- Respond to IT requests, issues and failures to minimise disruption to staff and projects.
- Monitor and maintain IT security in accordance with HBG.5 Security of Computer Systems.
- Monitor and maintain cyber security (ATP quarantine, reports from staff, external cyber reports, etc.).
- Restore IT capabilities following hardware or software failures.
- Develop the Institute’s systems and processes to ensure continued Cyber Essentials PLUS accreditation.
- Maintain staff awareness of cyber threats, including annual training.
- Participate in IT Management meetings with ITM, CSM and CTO when invited.
- Work collaboratively with colleagues to maintain the Institute’s core values.
- Take responsibility for safeguarding health and safety of self and others in the course of duties.
- Comply with all Institute policies and procedures, with particular regard to data protection policies.
- Take part in scheduled team meetings and contribute proactively towards furthering the business aims of the Institute.
- Perform other reasonable duties assigned by the line manager or CEO.
