Machinist
Smiley & Co, Ltd. – Nottingham
Salary: £15 per hour
The Role
Undertake machining works as directed by the department supervisor and workshop manager. Control and operate the machine shop equipment such as CNC, milling machines, pillar drill and lathes.
Key Responsibilities
- Review samples, drawings or instructions to understand specifications of output.
- Plan the sequence of necessary actions for the completion of a job.
- Take measurements and mark material for cutting or shaping.
- Read and interpret CAD drawings to select correct machinery.
- Work from samples.
- Select appropriate machines and load material for a job.
- Determine and program batch size, machine speed, etc.
- Monitor machine, adjust feed, maintain temperature and identify issues.
- Check output to ensure consistency with specifications and discard defects.
- Keep records of approved and defective units or final products.
- Perform routine machine maintenance and repair minor damages.
- Operate lathes, milling machines, slotters, grinders and pillar drill.
- Operate CNC machines.
- Read blueprints and use precision tools such as callipers, micrometres and vernier.
- Work with ferrous, non-ferrous, plastics and copper materials.
- Repair journals and shafts.
- Maintain safe operation of equipment by adhering to safety protocols and regulations.
- Maintain a safe and clean work environment.
- Work independently or as part of a team.
- Handle batch or single item works.
- Perform any other duties within your capabilities as directed by the Workshop Manager.
Skills and Qualifications
- Proven experience as machinist.
- On‑call/rotary availability.
- Experience working with machine tools or mechanical assembly.
- Experience programming manual, semi‑automated or automated tools and machines.
- Experience with welding and balancing would be beneficial.
- Ability to use precision tools to take accurate measurements.
- Ability to read blueprints, schematics and manuals.
- Good at math with analytical abilities.
- Computer skills (MS Office Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
- Excellent communication and time management skills.
- Knowledge of speeds and feeds.
- Knowledge of safety protocols and PPE.
- Attention to detail with good communication skills.
