Company Overview

Smile Materials was built to inspire progress. Guided by joyous, purposeful principles, we transform discarded materials into beautiful, functional architectural panels and surface products. From our factory in Swansea, our work reaches architects, designers and luxury brands around the world. Our distinctive, circular materials are specified for everything from retail displays and counters to furniture, signage and shower panels. Whether a bespoke order or a large‑scale production run, we deliver with creativity, precision and care. Together with our network of like‑minded manufacturing partners, we’re expanding the reach of circular design globally, turning would‑be waste into design with impact.

To support this growth, we’re seeking an ambitious Senior Mechatronic Engineer (Electrical Bias) to take a leading role in the reliability, maintenance and continuous improvement of our manufacturing equipment, electrical systems and site infrastructure.

Working closely with our Head of Manufacturing, you’ll combine strong technical expertise with a hands‑on, problem‑solving approach to improve equipment performance, reduce downtime and identify opportunities for greater efficiency, automation and sustainability. You’ll also lead engineering projects, develop preventative maintenance strategies and provide technical guidance to support the continued development of our manufacturing operation.

This is an opportunity to make a real impact in a growing, innovative business, where your ideas and expertise will help shape how we work and support our next stage of growth.

The Role

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead fault‑finding and root cause analysis across electrical systems, automated production equipment and industrial control systems.
  • Develop and implement preventative maintenance strategies to improve equipment reliability, availability and performance.
  • Support the installation, commissioning, optimisation and upgrade of manufacturing equipment and automation systems.
  • Work with PLCs, HMIs, VSDs, servo drives and associated industrial control technologies.
  • Take responsibility for the maintenance and reliability of site utilities and infrastructure, including electrical distribution, compressed air and building services.
  • Lead engineering and capital investment projects from specification and planning through to commissioning and handover.
  • Identify and deliver continuous improvement opportunities to increase productivity, reduce waste and minimise downtime and operating costs.
  • Identify opportunities to improve energy efficiency and reduce utility consumption.
  • Coordinate external contractors, suppliers and specialist engineering support, ensuring work is completed safely and effectively.
  • Maintain appropriate engineering documentation and support compliance with relevant health, safety and engineering standards.
  • Provide technical guidance and support to maintenance personnel, working collaboratively with Manufacturing and other teams.

About You

You’re an experienced electrical or mechatronic engineer who enjoys solving complex technical problems, improving equipment performance and finding practical ways to make things work better. You’re comfortable taking ownership of engineering challenges, leading projects and working collaboratively with our teams across the business.

You’ll ideally bring:

  • Significant engineering experience within a manufacturing or industrial environment, normally at least five years.
  • An HNC, HND, degree or equivalent technical background in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics or a related discipline.
  • Strong knowledge of industrial electrical systems, motor control, automation and fault‑finding.
  • Experience with PLC‑based control systems, ideally Siemens S7, together with HMI, SCADA and VSD technologies.
  • Experience of preventative maintenance, root cause analysis and improving equipment reliability.
  • A track record of delivering engineering projects, equipment upgrades or continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Experience coordinating contractors, suppliers and external engineering specialists.
  • A sound understanding of electrical safety, machinery safety and relevant engineering standards.
  • Strong analytical, organisational and communication skills, with a proactive approach to problem‑solving and continuous improvement.

Relevant electrical qualifications and demonstrable competence appropriate to the work undertaken are important. Knowledge of BS 7671 and the 18th Edition Wiring Regulations would be beneficial. Experience of site utilities, building services, energy efficiency and capital investment projects would also be advantageous.
