Autism and complex communication needs ?

We are currently recruiting for an experienced and passionate SEN Teacher to join a specialist school setting in North London.

The successful candidate will have proven experience working with autistic pupils who are non-verbal or have significant communication difficulties .

The Role

As an SEN Teacher, you will be responsible for planning and delivering engaging, differentiated lessons that meet the individual needs of pupils with a range of special educational needs.

You will work closely with teaching assistants, therapists and other professionals to create a safe, supportive and stimulating learning environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan and deliver engaging lessons tailored to individual pupil needs.
  • Support pupils with Autism and complex learning needs.
  • Work confidently with non-verbal pupils and pupils with significant communication difficulties .
  • Use appropriate communication strategies and visual supports to promote engagement and independence.
  • Develop positive relationships with pupils and understand their individual needs and behaviours.
  • Differentiate the curriculum to ensure all pupils can access learning.
  • Support pupils' social, emotional and academic development.
  • Work collaboratively with LSAs, teaching assistants, therapists and senior staff.
  • Monitor pupil progress and contribute to individual education plans and reviews.
  • Promote a positive, inclusive and nurturing classroom environment.

The Ideal Candidate

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or an equivalent recognised teaching qualification.

Proven experience working with children or young people with Autism.

Specific experience working with non-verbal pupils is essential.

  • Experience supporting pupils with complex communication needs.
  • A good understanding of Autism and associated learning needs.
  • Experience using visual communication, PECS, symbols or other alternative communication methods would be advantageous.
  • A patient, calm and nurturing approach.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • A genuine passion for supporting children with additional needs.
