Smile Education is working in partnership with a specialist school to recruit an experienced Autism Specialist Teacher. The Role
As an Autism Specialist Teacher, you will be responsible for delivering engaging, highly differentiated lessons that meet the individual needs of your pupils. Working with small class sizes, you'll build positive relationships, develop personalised learning strategies and support pupils to achieve their academic, social and emotional goals. You'll work closely with Teaching Assistants, therapists, SENCOs and families to ensure every learner receives the consistent support they need.
Your Responsibilities
- Plan and deliver creative, differentiated lessons that reflect individual EHCP outcomes.
- Adapt teaching methods to suit a range of communication styles and learning profiles.
- Create calm, structured and predictable classroom environments that reduce anxiety and promote engagement.
- Support pupils with emotional regulation, communication and social interaction.
- Use visual supports, sensory strategies and structured routines to maximise learning opportunities.
- Assess, monitor and record pupil progress, contributing to reviews and ongoing planning.
- Work collaboratively with Teaching Assistants and wider multidisciplinary teams.
- Build strong relationships with parents, carers and external professionals.
- Promote independence, confidence and life skills alongside academic achievement.
- Celebrate every success, recognising that progress looks different for every learner.
The Ideal Candidate
We're looking for someone who is passionate about inclusive education and understands the importance of building meaningful relationships with autistic learners. You'll have:
- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), QTLS or an equivalent recognised teaching qualification.
- Experience teaching pupils with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC).
- Excellent knowledge of adaptive teaching and differentiated learning.
- Strong classroom management skills using positive behaviour support approaches.
- Confidence working alongside multidisciplinary teams.
- Excellent communication and organisational skills.
- A calm, patient and resilient approach.
Desirable Experience
Although not essential, experience or training in any of the following would be highly beneficial:
- TEACCH
- PECS
- Makaton
- Attention Autism
- Intensive Interaction
- Zones of Regulation
- SCERTS
- Sensory integration strategies
- Team Teach or positive behaviour support training
- Supporting pupils with Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN)
- Working with pupils who have ADHD, learning disabilities or sensory processing differences
