Overview

We are looking for a Senior Dev Ops Engineer to join our Engineering Team.

As a Senior Dev Ops Engineer you will design, build and operate the platform that powers SMG products and will work as part of a cross-cutting Dev Ops function that embeds directly into product engineering squads.

Azure is our primary cloud and the core focus of this role.

You will lead Azure platform setup, cloud foundations, and day‑to‑day operations, while also supporting and integrating with live AWS infrastructure, which remains in active use as a secondary environment, as well as partnering with engineering teams to deliver a reliable, observable, secure, and cost‑effective platform that enables safe, repeatable delivery across all cloud environments.

Responsibilities

  • Own and evolve Azure cloud foundations: subscriptions, management groups, policies, landing zones, networking (VNETs, peering, hybrid connectivity), and identity (Azure AD / Entra ID).
  • Manage day‑to‑day Azure operations and be the go‑to Azure expert across engineering.
  • Support and maintain live AWS infrastructure alongside the existing Dev Ops Engineers.
  • Write and maintain Ia C using Terraform for Azure‑native resources.
  • Build automation, Git Ops patterns, and self‑service platform tooling that enables development teams to provision and operate infrastructure reliably.
  • Design, build and maintain CI/CD pipelines using Azure Dev Ops as the primary tool, alongside Bit Bucket Pipelines where in use.
  • Operate our observability stack (Datadog) across all environments.
  • Define and maintain SLOs, SLI dashboards, incident response runbooks and playbooks.
  • Lead blameless postmortems and on‑call processes.
  • Embed security best practices into platform and pipeline design.
  • Participate in audit remediation, manage cloud cost optimisation, and enforce tagging and governance standards across Azure and AWS environments.
  • Mentor engineering teams on Dev Ops and SRE practices.
  • Author clear, actionable, version‑controlled runbooks and onboarding guides that enable self‑service.
  • Bring Dev Ops thinking into the squads you embed with.

Qualifications

  • Proven Dev Ops/SRE experience supporting cloud‑based Saa S platforms.
  • Hands‑on Azure expertise: subscriptions, Azure AD/Entra ID, VNETs, Azure Monitor, Azure Dev Ops. Azure certification is strongly preferred.
  • Working knowledge of AWS and comfort operating in it as a secondary live environment.
  • Ia C expertise: Terraform (primary); Bicep/ARM.
  • CI/CD pipeline authoring: Azure Dev Ops, Bit Bucket Pipelines and/or Git Hub Actions.
  • Observability tooling: Datadog – metrics, tracing, logging, and SLI/SLO definition.
  • Incident management: comfortable running on‑call and leading blameless postmortems.
  • Strong scripting and automation skills: Python, Bash, or Power Shell.
  • Strong written communication – clear runbooks, playbooks and documentation.
  • Comfortable working across multiple squads with shifting context and priorities.
  • Nice to have Azure certifications (AZ-104, AZ-400 or equivalent).
  • Nice to have AWS certifications.
  • Nice to have experience with chaos engineering and capacity planning.
  • Nice to have platform engineering experience: developer portals, golden paths, self‑service infrastructure.

How to prepare for a job interview at SMG

Brush Up on Your Coding Skills

For a full-time software engineering role, it's crucial that we stay sharp with our coding abilities. Expect technical questions that might involve solving problems on the spot or discussing algorithms. Practise on platforms like LeetCode or HackerRank to get comfortable with the types of questions that often come up.

Know Your Tools and Frameworks

Make sure we’re well-acquainted with the tools and technologies listed in the job description. Familiarise ourselves with any specific frameworks or programming languages mentioned. If SMG uses React or Node.js, for instance, be ready to discuss how we’ve used them in previous projects or coursework.

Showcase Your Projects

Bring along a portfolio that highlights our best work. This could be code samples, GitHub repositories, or any side projects we’ve built. Make sure we can talk through our thought process for each project, especially the challenges we faced and how we solved them—this shows our problem-solving skills in action.

Prepare for Behavioural Questions

While technical skills are key, full-time positions also require cultural fit. Be ready to discuss our previous experiences and how we handle teamwork, conflict, and deadlines. Brush up on the STAR method—Situation, Task, Action, Result—to clearly articulate our past experiences when discussing how we've contributed to a team.
