  • Why this job: Make a real impact on water efficiency while developing your engineering skills.
  • Qualifications: Engineering degree (Civil, Chemical, or Mechanical) and good numerical reasoning.

You’ll be based from Leeds, but will be onsite 2-3 days a week, visiting water company sites across the country with a senior engineer, and will take on more and more responsibility yourself as time goes on.

A lot of what you will do relates to deploying specialist measuring equipment onto pipelines; the information generated from this goes to specialist software that is used by office based engineers, so they can identify areas of concern, or potential issues; for example surges of water. You’ll be involved with this too, when you’re in the office, and it’s a great opportunity to use your numerical reasoning skills.

When you’re on-site there will be a real hands-on aspect to the role. You’ll be going up ladders, down manholes; tightening loose bolts, drilling. And lots more. You can take a real pride in helping to make sure that water and sewer networks work efficiently.

Over the last 7 years the business has taken on around 15 graduates; and most are still there, which is something to be proud of. The feedback from those graduates is that management are supportive, and everyone gets on well together. And they have different problems to solve every day; which makes the work very interesting.

What You’ll Need:

  • Don’t worry if you’ve not done anything like this as full training will be provided. You’ll quickly develop specialised knowledge.
  • Your degree should be engineering based; ideally Civil, Chemical, or Mechanical.
  • You should be able to demonstrate good numerical reasoning and attention to detail.
  • If you have some Hydraulics knowledge, or experience with using software then that would be ideal, but if not it can be trained.
  • You will need to be based within commuting distance of Leeds (Bradford is a good location too).
  • And of course you’ll need to be happy regularly working on site.
