Role Summary

This VP-level role reports to the head of the financial crime advisory team; it does not involve any line management responsibility. The financial crime advisory team is part of the wider 'advisory & frameworks' function that is responsible, from a 2LoD perspective, for managing a range of financial crime risk types & issues, and developing and enhancing the bank's control framework. The team is in continual contact with different business areas, and other teams across the financial crime & compliance organisation, providing the opportunity to build constructive and valuable relationships with a wide range of stakeholders. Whilst being a key member of a small team, the role-holder requires a high level of autonomy to proactively manage and deliver on a diverse book of work.

Position Description

Core responsibilities & key experience:

  • 1LoD’s first point of contact for all financial-crime related matters arising from SMBC’s UK business divisions; working closely with the business and providing dedicated support and guidance.
  • Proactively enhancing the anti-financial crime control framework across 1LoD & 2LoD, with the ability to engage, manage and influence senior stakeholders to deliver change.
  • In-depth experience of the UK regulatory landscape and the ability to interpret, apply and advise on relevant pieces of ‘law, regulation and guidance’ in a range of contexts.
  • Proven ability to identify, understand, and manage the financial crime-specific risks that products, transactions, and customers may present.
  • Working knowledge across a suite of products including trade and export finance, project finance, markets, and commodity financing preferred.
  • Ability to identify, resolve and escalate, as appropriate, all financial crime-related risks & issues to senior management and relevant governance committees.
