  • SCADA & Communications Engineer (EPC – HV Substation & BESS Projects)
  • Reports to: Lead Electrical Engineer / Engineering Manager

This is a key technical position ensuring our energy infrastructure achieves safe, reliable, and cyber-secure control and data connectivity between site assets, substations, and remote monitoring centres.

You’ll collaborate closely with electrical, protection, and commissioning teams across all project stages - from concept and detailed design through to FAT, SAT, and final handover.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and develop SCADA and communication architectures for HV substations and BESS installations (11–400 k V).
  • Specify, configure, and integrate RTUs, PLCs, HMI systems, and network equipment (routers, switches, firewalls).
  • Develop SCADA I/O schedules, communication diagrams, and interface control documents (ICDs).
  • Define and implement communication protocols (IEC 61850, IEC 60870-101/104, DNP3, Modbus TCP/RTU, etc.).
  • Ensure robust and compliant data, control, and telemetry links between site assets, DNO/TO control centres, and client systems.
  • Support FAT/SAT, testing, and commissioning of SCADA and communication systems.
  • Liaise with DNOs, TOs, and NGESO for telemetry, RTU configuration, and interface acceptance.
  • Ensure designs comply with National Grid, DNO, and ENA standards, and meet cybersecurity and IT/OT network security requirements.
  • Work closely with Protection & Controls, Electrical Design, and Commissioning teams.
  • Manage all technical documentation and workflows via Procore or equivalent platforms.
  • Apply knowledge of CDM Regulations 2015, the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, and other key HSE legislation.

Qualifications & Experience

Essential

  • Degree (or equivalent) in Electrical, Electronic, Control, or Communications Engineering.
  • Proven experience designing or delivering SCADA and communications systems in HV substations, grid connections, or BESS projects.
  • Strong understanding of industrial communication protocols and control architectures.
  • Hands-on experience with RTUs, PLCs, HMIs, and network devices from major OEMs (e. g. Siemens, Schneider, GE, SEL, Emerson).
  • Familiarity with network configuration (VLANs, routing, VPNs, firewalls).
  • Knowledge of IEC 61850, IEC 60870, and DNP3 standards.
  • EPC or design-and-build delivery experience.
  • Experience integrating BESS Controllers, Inverters, Transformers, and Auxiliaries within SCADA systems — including coordination of data exchanges between SCADA–PPC, SCADA–EMS, and SCADA–DNO/IDNO interfaces.

Desirable

  • Understanding of grid code compliance, telemetry, and DNO/NGESO interface requirements.
  • Knowledge of cybersecurity standards (ISO 27001, NCSC CAF, etc.) for OT systems.
  • Experience with Procore, BIM 360, or other digital collaboration tools.
  • Chartered Engineer or working toward professional registration (IET or equivalent).

What We Offer

  • Competitive salary and benefits package.
  • Opportunity to work on cutting-edge renewable and grid-scale energy projects across the UK.
  • Exposure to EPC project delivery from design to commissioning.
  • Support for professional development, training, and chartership.
  • A collaborative, innovative, and growth-focused working environment.
