Main Purpose of the Role

As a Design Engineer, your primary responsibility will be to create accurate and timely 3D CAD drawings for both standard and bespoke components. These technical drawings form the foundation for successful manufacturing and ensure that all customer-specific requirements are precisely met. This role sits at the heart of the design and engineering function, supporting a wide range of activities from processing day-to-day orders to contributing to strategic development projects. You will play a key role in enabling engineering design updates, supporting continuous product improvement, and actively participating in the New Product Introduction (NPI) process.

Scope of the Role

  • Responsible for the accuracy of manufactured products against customer requested specifications.
  • Standardising workflow for Manufacturing through design.

Primary Objectives

  • Produce accurate and timely 3D CAD drawings for both standard and bespoke steel doorsets and associated components.
  • Ensure all technical drawings fully meet customer-specific requirements and are suitable for efficient, high-quality manufacturing.
  • Act as a key contributor to the processing of daily customer orders, translating specifications into manufacturable designs.
  • Support engineering design changes and contribute to continuous improvement in product quality and consistency.
  • Participate in the New Product Introduction (NPI) process, including the creation of 3D models, technical drawings, and supporting documentation for new product launches.
  • Collaborate closely with internal teams including production, quality, planning, sales, and R&D to ensure practical, cost-effective, and compliant solutions.
  • Contribute to the standardisation and optimisation of internal drawing practices, templates, and design workflows.
  • Assist in maintaining a reliable and structured design data management system, ensuring design accuracy and traceability.
  • Maintain organized records of revisions, approvals, and document control as per project and business requirements.
  • Contribute to quality improvement initiatives by addressing NCRs and updating documentation accordingly.
  • Assist in developing installation manuals and production documentation.
  • Ensure all outputs meet relevant industry, health & safety, and company standards.
  • Demonstrate leadership by consistently upholding and modelling the highest standards of safety, quality and workplace behaviour, setting a positive example for others to follow.
  • Undertake any other reasonable duties or tasks as requested by the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) to support operational needs and business objectives.

Primary Measures of Effectiveness

  • Accuracy of Drawings: High first-time-right rate with minimal rework required due to design errors.
  • Timely Execution of NPI and Engineering Changes: Consistent delivery of accurate drawings and documentation within agreed timeframes to support new product development and design updates.
  • Reduction in Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs): Demonstrated impact on product quality through proactive and preventative design improvements.
  • Responsiveness to Production Support: Prompt and effective resolution of technical queries raised by production, minimising delays and disruptions.
  • On-Time Delivery of Drawing Packages: Completion of all required drawings and documentation in line with project schedules and order processing timelines.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience Required for Role

  • Proven experience in a CAD design or engineering role within a manufacturing or construction-related industry.
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, Autodesk Inventor, or equivalent).
  • Understanding of DriveWorks would be advantageous.
  • Experience producing bespoke manufacturing drawings and order-specific configurations.
  • Ability to interpret technical specifications and customer requirements.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills with a collaborative mindset.
  • High attention to detail and accuracy, with strong organisational skills.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office tools.
