Technologist – Polymer R&D (Contract)

Smart4Chemicals are currently recruiting for a Technologist for a high-performance polymer manufacturer for their site based in Lancashire to join their Polymer R&D team, focused on developing and analysing advanced thermoplastics for demanding technical applications.

This is a hands-on role suited to a PhD, or early-career professional with relevant experience in polymer analysis and a strong interest in applied materials research.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design, plan, and carry out experimental work supporting polymer innovation, product development, and process optimisation
  • Perform detailed characterisation using SEM, SEM-EDX, Microscopy, DSC, Rheology, TGA, and mechanical/physical testing techniques
  • Interpret experimental data to draw meaningful conclusions and support technical decision-making
  • Support scale-up activities and plant trials for new material launches or product enhancements
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams and external stakeholders to deliver R&D objectives
  • Maintain clear documentation of experimental work and contribute to lab safety protocols
  • Promote high standards of SHE (Safety, Health & Environment) in all lab activities

Key Requirements:

  • Degree or higher qualification in Chemistry, Materials Science, or a related discipline
  • Practical experience with SEM, Microscopy, SEM-EDX, DSC, Rheology, TGA, and mechanical/physical testing (gained through a PhD, placement, or industrial role)
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to evaluate and communicate complex data
  • Team-oriented with excellent communication and organisational abilities
  • Understanding of safe lab practices and awareness of intellectual property considerations
