Multi Skilled Machine Operative

Pay Rate: £17.00 per hour
Hours: 17:00 – 04:00 (1-hour unpaid break)
Shift Pattern: Night Shift | Weekend working on a rota basis

We are looking for an experienced and reliable Multi Skilled Machine Operative to join our team. This is a hands-on role operating a range of mobile plant within a busy waste processing and recycling environment.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of 360 Material Handlers, Large Shovels and associated plant, ensuring materials are handled correctly, production is maintained and the site is kept safe, clean and operational.

The Role

As a Multi Skilled Machine Operative, you will play a key role in maintaining a consistent flow of material through our waste processing operation. You will be responsible for operating machinery safely and efficiently, identifying unsuitable or potentially damaging materials and supporting the wider site team when required.

360 Machine Operative Responsibilities

• Constantly and uniformly feed in-feed materials into the Metso shredder to maximise production.
• Blend different in-feed materials sufficiently before placing them into the shredder.
• Identify and remove large, bulky, potentially damaging or unsuitable items from waste before shredding.
• Help maintain a clear tipping hall floor by heaping feed stock and working from the waste heap face.
• Maintain the 360 Material Handler and Metso shredder as required.
• Assist in identifying problematic waste deliveries in relation to their suitability, composition and nature.
• Complete daily mobile plant maintenance check sheets fully and accurately.
• Keep the machine cab clean, tidy and in a suitable condition.
• Ensure the 360 and Metso are fuelled with Diesel and AdBlue at the end of each shift.
• Blow out filters and radiators and ensure machinery is ready for the following shift.
• Notify the Maintenance Team of shredder throughput issues.
• Assist safely with clearing blockages when required.
• Carry out Fire Watch duties, particularly around the Metso shredder, and follow site procedures in the event of a fire within the waste reception hall or during shredding operations.

Large Shovel Driver Responsibilities - SRF Shovel

• Keep the SRF shredder discharge conveyor free from material at all times.
• Ensure SRF product remains free from contamination.
• Load the correct SRF product onto the correct vehicle.
• Ensure lorries are loaded in priority order and within required timescales.
• Inspect trailers for cleanliness before loading and complete all associated paperwork.
• Inspect and blow down loaded trailers to remove loose debris prior to dispatch.
• Ensure SRF grades are kept separate and stored in their designated bays.
• Communicate effectively with the weighbridge operator to ensure the correct SRF grade is loaded.
• Ensure all SRF is moved at least twice before loading out to allow the product to cool and dry.
• Immediately clear any spillages arising during loading.
• Assist with maintaining discharge bays, including pushing up, emptying and loading out other products as directed.

Waste Reception Shovel

• Constantly and uniformly feed materials to the 360 Material Handler to maintain a consistent shredder feed.
• Blend different in-feed materials before pushing them to the 360 Material Handler.
• Remove large, bulky, potentially damaging or unsuitable materials from the waste stream.
• Help maintain a clear tipping hall floor by efficiently managing and heaping feed stock.
• Keep waste behind discharging lorries at a suitable level to maximise tipping efficiency.
• Assist in identifying problematic waste deliveries based on suitability, composition and nature.

Plant Maintenance & Housekeeping

All mobile plant operators are responsible for leaving their machinery clean, safe and ready for the next shift.

This includes:

• Checking and replenishing Diesel.
• Checking engine and hydraulic oils.
• Checking and replenishing AdBlue.
• Fully greasing machinery as required.
• Blowing out engine filters and radiators.
• Blowing out and cleaning the cab.
• Carrying out regular checks for contamination.
• Keeping floors and working areas free from waste and contamination.
• Reporting defects, damage or maintenance requirements promptly.
• Completing all required plant inspection and maintenance documentation.

Additional Duties

• All certified operators may be required to operate other items of mobile plant as and when required.
• When plant is not operating, operators will be expected to assist with other duties across the site.
• All mobile plant operatives will be required to cover a weekend loading day on a rota basis.
• Ensure suitable cover is available when taking breaks so that operations can continue safely.
• Carry out any other reasonable duties required to support the safe and efficient operation of the site.

What We're Looking For

We are looking for operators who are:

• Experienced in operating 360 Material Handlers, Loading Shovels or similar mobile plant.
• Safety-conscious and able to work responsibly in a busy industrial environment.
• Reliable, punctual and willing to work as part of a team.
• Able to identify unsuitable, contaminated or potentially dangerous materials.
• Comfortable working independently and making sensible decisions within site procedures.
• Capable of carrying out daily plant checks and basic machine maintenance.
• Flexible and willing to operate different items of plant where trained and competent.

Certificates:

We will consider applicants with in-house or expired plant operator certificates, provided they have relevant experience and can demonstrate that they are capable of operating our machinery safely.
