Fixed Plant Fitter

Location: Ancaster, NG32. Pay: £17.00 - £21.00 per hour (DOE). Hours: 45 hours per week – rotating day and night shifts.

  • Day Shift: 1 x 12‑hour shift per week
  • Night Shift: Monday to Friday, 40 hours per week
  • Overtime: Paid after 45 hours

Smart Solutions is recruiting a skilled Fixed Plant Fitter to join a busy waste management and recycling facility in Ancaster.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced mechanical engineer or fitter looking for a long‑term role within a fast‑paced industrial environment.

You'll play a key role in ensuring the site's fixed plant machinery operates safely, reliably and efficiently while contributing to continuous improvements across the operation.

The Role

As a Fixed Plant Fitter, you will be responsible for maintaining, repairing and improving a range of fixed plant and mechanical equipment, including conveyors, shredders, balers and associated machinery.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out planned preventative and reactive maintenance on fixed plant machinery and site equipment.
  • Inspect, service and repair conveyors, shredders, balers and other mechanical systems.
  • Diagnose mechanical faults and complete repairs to minimise downtime.
  • Respond to equipment breakdowns and support emergency repairs.
  • Assist with planned preventative maintenance schedules.
  • Support the installation and commissioning of new plant and equipment.
  • Work closely with engineering and operations teams to improve equipment reliability and performance.
  • Identify opportunities to improve efficiency and reduce downtime.
  • Complete all maintenance work in line with health, safety and environmental procedures.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records, inspection reports and parts usage.
  • Help maintain a safe, clean and compliant working environment.

About You

We're looking for a practical, hands‑on engineer with excellent mechanical fault‑finding skills and a proactive approach to maintenance.

  • Experience in plant maintenance, mechanical maintenance, engineering or a similar role.
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical systems and industrial machinery.
  • Experience carrying out both planned and reactive maintenance.
  • Excellent fault‑finding and problem‑solving abilities.
  • Experience working with conveyors, shredders, balers or other fixed plant equipment would be advantageous.
  • The ability to work safely in a busy operational environment.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • A reliable, flexible and proactive approach to work.
  • A strong commitment to health, safety and environmental standards.
  • A qualification in Mechanical Engineering, Plant Maintenance or a related discipline is desirable.
  • Experience within waste management, recycling, manufacturing, quarrying, aggregates, heavy industry or similar sectors is beneficial.
