Heavy Plant – Workshop Manager Salary: £45,000 – £50,000 (DOE) Hours: 06:00 – 17:00 | Full-Time | Permanent Location: Bedford Are you a hands-on leader with a strong background in heavy plant maintenance and a passion for developing people? We’re seeking an experienced Workshop Manager to oversee all workshop operations at a busy heavy plant hire depot in Bedford. In this role, you’ll report directly to the Depot Manager and lead a team of 4 Workshop Fitters and 2 Yard Staff, ensuring the company’s fleet of heavy plant equipment is maintained to the highest standards and fully compliant. The position is 50% hands-on engineering and 50% management and planning, offering a great balance of leadership and technical involvement. Key Responsibilities: * Lead, manage, and develop the workshop and yard teams. * Schedule and oversee planned maintenance, PDI’s, LOLER inspections, and repairs on heavy plant equipment. * Ensure timely turnaround of machinery to meet customer and hire demands. * Maintain accurate stock control, parts ordering and workshop records. * Drive a culture of safety, quality, and continuous improvement across the team. * Coordinate with Depot and Operations Managers to maximise fleet availability. * Deputise for the Depot Manager when required. What We’re Looking For: * City & Guilds / NVQ Level 2 or 3 in Plant Maintenance (or equivalent). * Proven background in heavy plant, construction equipment or similar mechanical industries. * Previous experience leading or supervising a team in a workshop environment. * Excellent problem-solving and organisational skills. * IT-literate and comfortable using workshop systems. * Full UK driving licence (max 3 points). You’ll Demonstrate: * A proactive, resilient and adaptable approach to changing priorities. * The ability to coach, mentor and motivate others. * Strong analytical thinking and confident decision-making skills. * A hands-on, “lead by example” work ethic.
