Smart Education is recruiting for a passionate and experienced Assistant Headteacher to join a specialist ASD provision in Harborne, supporting students aged 11 to 19 years. This is a 12-month maternity cover position starting in September 2025. The successful candidate will play a key leadership role within the school, supporting students with complex needs and contributing to whole-school improvement.

Expectations of the Assistant Headteacher role:

  • Provide strategic leadership to drive teaching and learning standards across the school
  • Support the Headteacher in the day-to-day running of the school and overall school improvement plan
  • Lead on behaviour management, safeguarding, and student wellbeing, ensuring a safe and inclusive learning environment
  • Model outstanding classroom practice and provide coaching and mentoring to staff
  • Engage effectively with parents, external agencies, and stakeholders to support student outcomes
  • Contribute to curriculum development and assessment strategies tailored to students with ASD and complex needs

Job Requirements for this Assistant Headteacher role:

  • Must hold a valid Child and Adult Enhanced DBS (or be willing to apply for one)
  • Must have QTS (Qualified Teacher Status)
  • Previous leadership experience in a special school or SEN setting is essential
  • Proven track record of working with students with complex needs, including ASD and associated conditions
  • Strong understanding of safeguarding and statutory responsibilities
  • Exceptional interpersonal and organisational skills
  • Ability to inspire, lead and develop staff to achieve their full potential
