Do you fancy working on the sort of ground-breaking product that lifts the bar for an entire industry? Smart Communications has done it before, we’re doing it again, and we’re looking for a talented, creative and motivated Build Engineer to help. Smart Communications use an automated pipeline to build, integrate, deploy and test software product changes and either deliver them to an internal release environment, or reject them and send back to the development team.
The role of the Build Engineer is to maintain and improve this pipeline so that it works faster, more reliably, gives better and earlier feedback, and can be increasingly trusted to automatically look after delivering a high-quality product. Your job is to automate complex build processes, removing manual steps, improving consistency, reliability and agility, throughout the full engineering lifecycle, from feature development to deployment. This requires identifying improvements, researching and implementing innovative solutions using off-the-shelf tools and libraries plus custom code and scripts.
About Smart Communications: Smart Communications is the only independent company focused 100% on customer conversations for the enterprise, and the only cloud solution ranked as a Leader in Gartner’s Magic Quadrant for CCM. More than 350 global brands – many in the world’s most highly regulated industries – rely on Smart Communications to make multi-channel customer communications more meaningful, while also helping them simplify their processes and operate more efficiently. Smart Communications is headquartered in London and New York and serves its customers from offices located across North America, Europe, and Asia Pacific.
Who are you? You could already be working as a Build Engineer, or maybe you’re working in a related role (e.g. Developer, QA, IT, Operations) that has allowed you to spend a good portion of your time in this area and you want to get into it more. Either way, you’ve got experience of building a Continuous Integration or Continuous Delivery pipeline using a mixture of off-the-shelf tools plus custom development of code or scripts. You’re a continuous learner, interested in technology and always looking for ways it can make things better or easier. If there’s a new tool or technique out there you want to know about it and evaluate how it can contribute to what you’re doing. You’re “lazy-in-a-good-way” – you work hard, but you’re too smart to keep doing a job you can make a computer do instead.
You’re comfortable discussing requirements with multiple stakeholders, throwing your own ideas into the mix and constructively engaging to iterate on requirements and deliver the maximum value for the effort expended. You’re a good team player, comfortable working with others. You recognise everyone has their own priorities, so you work to help others do what they need and enlist their help with your deliverables. You almost always get done what you say you will, and if you don’t you take the time to learn from the experience.
The responsibilities of the role include:
- Develop the architecture and strategy for delivering product going forward. Promoting the shift towards a Continuous Delivery model.
- Manage our team of Build Engineers to deliver the tools and services required to build and release our products reliably and efficiently.
- Responsibility for product releases. Meeting deadlines set by the business and our customers.
- Maintain an awareness of the state-of-the-art in the industry. Assess new ideas, tools, and technologies within the DevOps space to deliver on our strategy.
- Work to identify inefficient manual processes and develop automated solutions.
- Resolving day-to-day problems in the build process. Seek to improve processes to mitigate further problems.
- Champion continuous improvement of the build pipeline, the tools and processes that support it.
- Work with stakeholders: Product, Architecture, Development, EAG, and Operations to deliver our best-in-class CCM product to customers.
