Who are you?

• You consider yourself an Engineer, but your real skill is turning current AI capability into something that reliably ships — you keep on top of the fast-moving AI landscape and know when a new technique is actually ready to use in production versus when it's still a demo.
• You have solid experience with Python and Java, and a good practical understanding of the current AI landscape — foundation models, prompting and evaluation techniques, and where AI genuinely helps versus where simpler engineering is the better answer.
• You're a technical expert in your field who understands the other technologies used across the organisation and how they interact to deliver our product to customers.
• You're able to assess and prioritise technical debt, and you take the lead on complex or security-sensitive code reviews.
• You keep on top of industry developments and bring that knowledge into the team through projects, communities of practice, or informal knowledge sharing.
• You're comfortable mentoring other engineers and supporting the onboarding of new team members onto the Migrations codebase and tooling.

The responsibilities of the role include:

• Design and build AI-assisted tooling that accelerates and de-risks customer migrations onto and between Smart Communications products
• Apply current AI/LLM techniques where they add real value to migration analysis, transformation or validation work
• Collaborate closely with the wider Migrations and Platform teams on tooling and process
• Create and maintain automated tests alongside all product changes
• Mentor other engineers and support onboarding onto the team's codebase and tools
• Keep the team informed of relevant developments in the AI landscape
• Participate in the agile process including stand-ups, planning, demos and retrospectives

What we’re looking for: Must have skills/experience:

• Python
• Java
• A strong, current, practical understanding of the AI landscape (e.g. foundation models, prompting, embeddings, evaluation of AI-driven features)
• Experience integrating AI capabilities into production software, not just prototypes
• Senior-level engineering experience: able to assess technical debt, lead code reviews, and mentor others

Advantageous skills/experience:

• Experience with migration or data-transformation tooling
• Experience with AI platform services (e.g. AWS Bedrock, or the OpenAI or Anthropic APIs)
• Vector databases / retrieval-based approaches
• AWS and Cloud Infrastructure
• MCP
• Docker / Kubernetes
