Our client is one of the largest utility and civil engineering contractors with over 20 years’ experience built on strong values. The Role
Our client is looking for a Quantity Surveyor to manage the commercial and contractual aspects of civil engineering and construction projects, from initial cost planning through to final account settlement. The Quantity Surveyor will ensure alignment between company and client requirements, with a focus on cost efficiency, value optimisation and risk management to support the successful delivery of projects to agreed standards, budgets and timescales.
Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain strong working relationships with senior commercial and operational stakeholders within key client organisations
- Support Contract Managers and Senior Management in the financial management, reporting and performance of assigned contracts
- Prepare and submit applications for payment and associated reports in line with contractual deadlines
- Manage the subcontractor process, including approvals, work allocation, payment certification and maintaining accurate records
- Undertake full commercial management of projects, including cost control, forecasting, and progress monitoring
- Produce and manage Cost Value Reconciliations (CVRs), including analysis of performance, tracking of variations and reporting on profitability
- Attend regular client meetings to review financial performance, resolve outstanding balances and support positive cash flow
- Investigate and resolve payment discrepancies including weekly review of Statements of Account across all workstreams
- Identify, analyse and respond to commercial risks throughout the project lifecycle
- Prepare and submit early warnings, compensation events and claims in accordance with contract requirements and negotiate commercial settlements
- Contribute to value engineering initiatives by proposing alternative solutions to improve cost efficiency
- Provide commercial input on contractual and legal matters arising during project delivery
- Support the wider commercial team with administrative duties, including data entry into internal systems and maintaining accurate filing structures

Technical Skills & Experience
- Minimum 4 years’ relevant experience in a Quantity Surveyor role, ideally within utilities
- Strong numerical and financial management skills with a high level of commercial awareness
- Proven experience in cost control, forecasting and commercial reporting
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and associated financial systems
- Strong understanding of commercial contract law, particularly NEC forms of contract (Options A-E, Early Warning Notices, and Z Clauses)
Qualifications & Training
- BSc in Quantity Surveying or related subject
- Working towards or holding a professional accreditation (desirable)
- Full UK Driving Licence
