At SLR Consulting we are looking for new recruits to grow our rapidly expanding Mining Advisory team. The team provides important consulting services to the mining industry at every stage of project development, operation and closure, from initial exploration through to rehabilitation. This role is for a Principal Mining Engineer, to be based in our Almaty office in Kazakhstan.

With your knowledge and expertise, you will advise major mining companies, mid-caps, junior mining and exploration companies, along with financial institutions, governments, law firms, and individual investors, on the technical, financial and commercial aspects of mineral property development. You will be part of a broad EMEA team but will be required to help strengthen our presence in Kazakhstan and Central Asia.

As a Principal Mining Engineer you will work within the Mine Engineering sub-team of the Mining Advisory group in EMEA, alongside a global cohort of over 200 mining advisory personnel, and 2,000 mining-related staff. You will work alongside other mining consultants, including geologists, geotechnical engineers, mining engineers, and mineral processing engineers. The role will include elements of technical work, project management, and business development, and will involve some travel, and ultimately client-facing engagements. You will be contributing to a mix of due diligence, feasibility, and operational projects in mining consulting.

The role

In this role your duties will be varied, but will primarily involve:

  • Assessment, due diligence, and technical auditing of mines and projects
  • Inputs into, and management of, feasibility assessments (scoping/PEA, PFS, DFS)
  • Understanding of the Kazakhstan Subsoil Code, hands-on experience with KAZRC
  • Mine design and optimisation in a variety of commodities, including:
  • Running of 3D mine design and scheduling software as an advanced user
  • Estimation of project capital and operating costs
  • Financial modelling and analysis
  • Mineral Reserve estimation
  • Report writing and client presentations
  • Management of technical assignments, including budgets and cost control
  • Mentoring and leadership of other team members
  • Business development, with an expectation to bring new opportunities and projects into the company, particularly focusing on the Central Asia region
  • Travel abroad; extended periods are not the norm but may be required on occasion. Short term travel, often at short notice will likely be a frequent occurrence.
