SLR has an exciting opportunity for a Trainee Environmental Clerk of Works (ECoW) to join our team delivering construction phase environmental and ecological support. This role includes a comprehensive training programme to provide you with all the skills to be able to carry out foundation level environmental and ecological checks on a construction site. Topics include pollution prevention, waste management, chemical management, protected species (badger, bat, otter, water vole), reporting, and client liaison.

This vacancy is for a role to join a team which are already working on a range of nationally significant projects which are and will make a tangible contribution to our journey to Net Zero. This position presents an outstanding opportunity to join a large team of ecologists and environmental professionals, and be part of a wider group which also comprises ornithologists, hydrologists, archaeologists, waste specialists, engineers and more.

The role is for a trainee position, involving dedicated foundation level training to give you the basics of the role, which will be built upon through construction site-based work. This is a permanent opportunity and would suit those looking to enter into the environmental sector, those ready to take their next steps in their environmental career, those looking for a career change, or those looking to get back into the workplace. Site-based work will be dynamic and varied, and there will be a strong focus on renewable energy and infrastructure. Successful applicants would be willing to stay away from home for an average of four nights a week, or be able to use permanent accommodation on a full-time basis depending upon projects. Training will be based in Scotland initially, but if you are interested and are located elsewhere in the UK, please also apply so that we can note your interest for either future trainee intakes, or alternative project locations.

In This Role You Will

  • Undergo a substantial training programme to learn about foundation level ecological and environmental requirements on a construction site;
  • Be an integral member of our client’s delivery team on site (client facing);
  • Work alongside ecologists, engineers and site operatives;
  • Be responsible for environmental compliance and providing advice where non-compliance is noted;
  • Be responsible for the design and implementation of environmental and ecological mitigation (e.g. management plans, non-licensed method statements, protected species licences etc.);
  • Be responsible for delivering pragmatic and timely solutions to environmental and ecological constraints;
  • Delivering timely, concise and detail orientated reporting.

Essential

  • Have a flexible approach to work and willingness to develop new environmental and ecological field skills, including some working during unsociable hours;
  • Be willing to work away from home for 4 nights a week (expenses paid);
  • Have excellent communication skills and be able to integrate into the site project team;
  • Able to work independently, with initiative and self-motivation;
  • Ability to say no and hold your ground under pressure;
  • Have excellent planning and organization skills to keep ahead of the construction schedule;
  • Ability to assess a situation that has multiple influencing factors and provide clear and concise advice;
  • Hold a full UK driving license.

Beneficial, But NOT Required

  • Hold a degree in ecology or a related discipline;
  • Hold a white CSCS card;
  • Have experience of the same type of work;
  • Hold personal species licenses, such as bats, GCN, otter;
  • Be ‘qualifying member’ status or higher of CIEEM or other relevant professional institute.
