Due to business growth, we are seeking an experienced Project Ecologist to lead and deliver ecological components across large and complex projects in the Renewables, Built Environment and Infrastructure sectors.

Role Overview

The role involves field surveys and mitigation projects covering ornithology, protected mammals and habitats. Opportunities may include herpetofauna, fish habitat and invertebrate surveys. Significant travel and on-site fieldwork in varied conditions are required; our team supports flexible working, overtime and time off in lieu.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage ecological survey work packages, ensuring timely and budget-constrained delivery.
  • Oversee ecological aspects of projects, advising clients and contractors in the power, built environment and infrastructure sectors.
  • Prepare fee proposals, scopes of work, report writing and technical review of peer and sub-contractor reports.
  • Supervise and mentor ecology staff; manage team activities and lead site work on specialist ecological areas as required.
  • Collaborate with SLR technical teams on planning, landscape, hydrology, noise and air quality, and coordinate with senior ecology colleagues across offices.
  • Facilitate travel, schedule fieldwork and manage logistical requirements.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrable experience in ecological consultancy, with proven leadership and mentoring skills.
  • Competence in ecological surveying (terrestrial, botany, ornithology or other specialisms) and knowledge of UK and Scottish ecological legislation and policy.
  • BSc in Ecology, Biological Science or equivalent; MSc desirable; eligibility for Qualifying or Associate level CIEEM membership.
  • Strong theoretical grounding in ecology and environmental assessment, with experience in a range of survey techniques.
  • Botanical skills and habitat survey experience; specialist fauna survey experience (bats, reptiles, amphibians, water voles, otters, birds, invertebrates) is an advantage.
  • Experience in project management duties: planning, scheduling, budget control, and client liaison.
  • Protected/notable species survey experience relevant to Scotland.
  • Full UK driving licence.
